Gremlin Gremlins (Neca) - Ultimate Collection Rated 5.00 stars by RMaster007 The Mogwai… small, cute, and fluffy. But caring for one comes with three rules: don’t expose it to sunlight, don’t get it wet, and don’t feed it after midnight. Sunlight can kill it, getting it wet produces more, and feeding it after midnight results in it becoming one of these devils.
For years, the classic horror-comedy Gremlins has been a staple of NECA, with many figures produced. Their ultimates from recent years aren’t hard to find, and they’re available at plenty of retailers. Though if you’re going to start a collection, you’ll either start with Gizmo or a Gremlin.
I’ve talked about the ultimate-styled packaging a few times already, and most of the time, the front of it will have the material’s poster art on it. This is one of those cases. Like usual, the packaging is...[See More]
Trick 'r Treat Sam Trick 'r Treat (Neca) - Ultimate Rated 5.00 stars by RMaster007 As Halloween approaches, a lot of people are going to get in the mood with some horror films. Though if you can only see one, then I suggest watching Trick ‘r Treat. It’s a nice collection of stories all set on the same day that connect to each other in some way. It was not only my first horror film, but one of my favorites. NECA put out an ultimate of Sam, the pumpkin-headed spirit of Halloween that serves as the film’s mascot, like a year or two ago, and you may be able to find him easily enough online or through your local comic store or whatever.
The packaging is what we expect out of NECA, but it’s worth noting that the poster art on the front has a shiny effect to it. I don’t think more recent releases of this figure have this effect, so it’s definitely unique. Like always, the...[See More]
Colossal Chrome Dome Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca) - Basic Series Rated 4.90 stars by RMaster007 Move over, Krang, we got the biggest (non-quarter-scale) figure in NECA’s ’87 TMNT line, and his name is Chrome Dome. And the company seems pretty boastful about that.
The packaging is pretty much like what we’ve been seeing with these single-packed TMNT figures so far, what with the artwork and all. It definitely looks nice, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the art on the back is a hint to a future figure (hint: the fifth turtle). It’s collector-friendly like always, but I hope you don’t mind cutting out plastic ties like usual.
Chrome Dome appeared twice in the series, and his height was different in both. “Planet of the Turtleoids” depicted him as gigantic, but “Night of the Rogues” made him smaller, standing only just a few feet taller than everyone else. The height of the figure here...[See More]
Metalhead Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Super7) - Ultimates! Rated 4.80 stars by RMaster007 Looks like Super7 finally appealed to me with their Turtles figures by doing an updated version of one of my personal favorites from the original line. No, it’s sadly not Slash… but it is Metalhead (and we got Casey on track for next wave)! The packaging is the same-old, same-old, yadda, yadda, yadda… so let’s just move on.
Metalhead isn’t one of the Ninja Turtles, per say, but he’s still a turtle, mechanical or not, and he stands just as tall as them at 6”. His appearance isn’t too much different from his 1989 counterpart, but his torso looks quite unlike the original in which he actually has a neck. Everything looks just as good as before, and the head even has the translucent eyes and brain just like the original figure, in addition to an extra head with painted eyes and brain....[See More]
Muckman & Joe Eyeball (Muck Everlasting) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca) - Basic Series Rated 4.90 stars by RMaster007 What better feeling is there than going into Target and finding that one figure you’d never thought you would ever see in-store? I experienced that feeling when I went to one store and was lucky enough to see one of NECA’s latest TMNT releases, Muckman, right on the shelves. Considering the fact that I never saw Metalhead, Krang, or the Ultimate Foot Soldier in-store, seeing him and Mondo was a pleasant surprise. They were one-off characters in the original cartoon, but they were still pretty memorable (at least more so from the old Playmates line, but still).
The packaging continues the trend of FHE-styled box art, and the illustrations still look as great as ever. This box is pretty tall as well, but I have a feeling that the one for the upcoming Chrome Dome will be much bigger. Being...[See More]
Max Sam & Max (Boss Fight Studio) - Basic Series Rated 4.90 stars by RMaster007 Jeez, it took me how long to get the Boss Fight Max to go with my Sam? I got the big guy like back around April or May I believe, and it’s like almost the end of August now? Sheesh, you think a guy who said that you can’t have Sam without Max would take this long to complete the duo. I caved in a while back ordered him through BBTS, and it didn’t take too long for him to get here.
The packaging is the same as what Sam has, but the graphics are somewhat different. Still, it looks great and it’s easy to open, so not much to say here. Max himself stands about 4 ¼” tall from the big feet to his rabbit ears, and he looks nice. Like with Sam, you get three options for heads, an open mouth smile, a grinning head, and one with a blank mouthless stare (think Hello Kitty). The ears are separate...[See More]
Homer Simpsons (Playmates) - 9" Scale Rated 3.75 stars by RMaster007 In case you haven’t heard, Super7 recently revealed that they got the Simpsons license, along with the first wave of “ULTIMATES” for them. While it’s an unusual line-up for this wave (only two regular characters and three one-offs), the figures look great and it shows how deep the company is going with the license. But years before all this, Playmates did their own line of Simpsons figures in the early 2000s known as World of Springfield. While the main gimmick with them was that they could talk when connected to a playset, over time I came to appreciate the great sculpts, good accessories, and the many characters it did. Aside from that, they also did a large-scale line of non-talking figures known as Faces of Springfield. I’ve had Homer for a while now and I may as well go ahead and do...[See More]
Rocksteady Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Super7) - Ultimates! Rated 4.90 stars by RMaster007 It hasn’t been too long since the third wave of Super7’s TMNT Ultimates began shipping out, and they’re not just available through S7 and other online retailers, a few comic shops have been getting them in as well, but the only two my comic store got are Rocksteady and Metalhead. Had to grab Rocksteady go with the Bebop I already have, of course.
The packaging is just like what we got in waves one and two, but the cardboard backdrop on the inside is different this time around. Originally, you had to pull that out to get to the figure, but here the top flaps up so you can remove the plastic tray more easily, and it’s a nice improvement. There’s also a single twist tie as well to hold in the figure, which is quite a relief.
Remember how big Bebop was? Well, it’s no surprise that...[See More]
Foot Soldier (Trouble's Afoot) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca) - Basic Series Rated 4.90 stars by RMaster007 NECA sure knows how to make the most out of a figure, huh? We’ve seen this Foot Soldier like what, eight times? Sure, they included it in two-packs, that SDCC eight-pack, and even damaged versions, but never by itself. Now that has changed with the ultimate release.
The packaging art is inspired by the old VHS tapes, but this is the coolest looking one they did. A small army of these diabolical droids scaling the rooftops is shown on the front, and it’s definitely beautiful. Everything inside is neatly packed inside plastic trays, and there’s only a few bits of plastic ties and tape you need to remove.
The sculpt of the Foot Soldier here is almost exactly like previous releases, with the only changes in it being the articulation, but more on that later. Standing around 6 ¼” tall, it...[See More]
Splinter Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Super7) - Ultimates! Rated 4.75 stars by RMaster007 It was an interesting choice of Super7 in their TMNT Ultimates line to have one of the turtles themselves in each wave, but even if there’s only one in the first wave, you still got to have their sensei/father figure, Splinter.
Do I even need to say anything about the packaging here? It’s pretty much just like everyone else in the line, and S7’s Ultimates in general. May as well just go right ahead and talk about the figure. The sculpt, much like the other figures, is based off of the original Playmates figure with some updated details. The tail is longer and pointier at the end, much like how it is on a real rat, and the head resembles the artwork on the original cardback more, with more pointed ears. I think some have said that his head looks off, but I think it’s alright. The detail...[See More]
