Flange Doozer
Fraggle Rock (Boss Fight Studio) - Basic Series
Rated 4.10 stars by RMaster007
We all know who the Muppets are, ranging from Kermit and crew to the many characters of Sesame Street, but we can't forget Fraggle Rock. I recently got into the show, and with its fun characters, great songs, and entertaining stories, it's definitely worth your time. Boss Fight Studios acquired the license last year, and the first wave should be here soon. For now, they're kicking things off with a "preview" figure: Flange, one of the various Doozers on the show. The packaging is somewhat simple but good, with a red-purple gradient almost all around, a cross-sell on one side, and a character bio and accessory layout on the back. It's a pretty small box, but so is the figure. The interior is what's really special, however. The figure is held onto a rock-like tray, which is appropriate...[See More]
Casey Jones
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Mirage Comics (Neca) - Basic Series
Rated 4.50 stars by RMaster007
Having already done the cartoon and movie versions of Casey Jones, it's no surprise that the Mirage version was next. Although he's been out for a while, I didn't pick it up until I hit up Best Buy recently in hopes of finding their exclusives. Better to get something than nothing. As with any incarnation of the character, Casey wears a hockey mask to conceal his identity. Actually, I think it's just to make him look cool. The mask has a blocky appearance, with a few scuffs here and there, letting you know he's been in a few fights. His wild, messy hair, rather than being solid black, has some brown wash to make it pop more. An unmasked portrait is included as well, with a gritted teeth expression fitting to the character. The figure is sculpted by Josh Sutton, with good attention paid...[See More]
Donatello
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca) - Giant-Sized
Rated 4.70 stars by RMaster007
Quarter-scale is rather unusual for action figures, considering that sixth-scale is a more common size for large figures. However, NECA's being producing figures in such as scale for years, with the more recent ones coming from the TMNT license. I already got the first 1/4 toon figure, Raphael, and now it's on to the second one: Donatello. Since the turtles all looked the same in the show, NECA was easily able to reuse the mold for Raphael for Donatello. The default portrait gives Donnie the reused mad eyes, but the closed mouth is a new piece, and the extra head is a surprised expression with open eyes and mouth. Like before, the eyes and mouths are separate from one another, and can be swapped. There's also a third mouth with a closed smile, but you will need to heat up the plastic to...[See More]
Angela
Gargoyles (Neca) - Ultimate
Rated 4.50 stars by RMaster007
Not only has NECA been doing pretty good with the Gargoyles license, but they've upped the frequency of releases. There were just three figures released last year, and only two the year before, but there's been NINE figures out this year, which is definitely a good sign as we're seeing more of the main cast finished up. One of the many recent releases is Goliath and Demona's daughter Angela, who was introduced during season two's long story arc. They're still killing it with the box art, with this one being done by Djordje Djokovic and Emiliano Santalucia. It depicts Angela in a foggy body of water, accompanied by Bronx, who was with her during that season two arc. I don't know if this is supposed to reference a specific episode, since it's been a minute since I watched the show. Still,...[See More]
Metaluna Mutant
Universal Monsters (Super7) - Ultimates
Rated 4.75 stars by RMaster007
Back in the 20th century, Universal made themselves known for providing the most-recognized versions of classic monsters, such as Frankenstein, the Wolfman, Dracula, the Creature of the Black Lagoon, and more. There are also a couple that aren't as well known nor did they exist before the films, such as the Metaluna Mutant. Appearing near the end of 1955's This Island Earth, the Mutant proved to be the most fondly-remember part of an otherwise uneventful film, and is one of the finest examples of "guy in a rubber suit" in cinema. It's gotten a few figures over the years, the latest being Super7's Ultimate, as the first Universal Monster in the format (NECA beat them to all the popular ones). The package is modeled after the Mutant's head, with a nice illustration provided by Dane Danner....[See More]
Back to School Gremlin
Gremlins (Neca) - Ultimate Collection
Rated 4.85 stars by RMaster007
Fall is approaching, and the kids are already heading back to school, but it means nothing for us who are already out of school. To commemorate this time of year, NECA did a "back to school" Gremlin a few years back, and you can get ahold of it easily if you know where to look. This version of the Gremlin is based off, of all things, an old newsprint ad from when the movie was still new. Said ad is recreated for the figure, but in color, and it looks very nice. The rest of the packaging has a school theme, and all the graphics are pretty good, with a few references to the film. As usual, there's a few plastic ties to snip out to remove the figure, but that aside, it's easy to get all the stuff out. The Gremlin utilizes a mostly unchanged sculpt from the regular version, done by Jason...[See More]
Skulk and Trancula
Sectaurs (Coleco) - Beasts
Rated 4.60 stars by Karl T. Face
Sectaurs had oddly complex characters. Take Skulk here: the sniveling, plug-ugly toady that often accompanies cartoon villains, he's secretly well versed in political intrigue, and also an excellent scout and trapper. Take into account his Quasimodo-esque origin story, and he reads more like a modern reboot than a c-list 80s property. Anyway, dude's roughly the same height as anyone else in the line, but with beastlier extremities and the only fully insectile face in the line. The balljoints at the hips have far better range than the shoulders, but that's how this line rolls. The swivel neck and hinged knees round things out. Paint is great as always, with the facial features picked out neatly, and some really nice airbrushing on the limbs. The real draw with these guys is the...[See More]
Slash
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Neca) - Adventures
Rated 4.80 stars by RMaster007
When NECA announced a return to the Mirage TMNT figure line, nobody expected them to do more comic figures than just the Turtles' origins. In addition to The Last Ronin, Archie Comics' TMNT Adventures gets its own new figure line. As far as I'm concerned, Adventures rarely, if ever, got figures, so this is kind of a big deal. And kicking this line off is Slash, the monstrous turtle who's had prior NECA experience. The packaging is similar the current Mirage line, with a trapezoidal window box outfitted with illustrations. These illustrations are provided by Adventures artist Ken Mitchroney, and the packaging motif as a whole gives off a vintage comic vibe. The one thing I don't like is the overabundance of plastic ties. Would it kill NECA to cut down on those? The last two Slash figures...[See More]
Wakko
Animaniacs (Super7) - Ultimates
Rated 4.35 stars by RMaster007
It's been a while since I got anything from Super7's Animaniacs Ultimates line, and considering how there's only five figures in the line, it shouldn't have taken me this long to complete the collection. Still, it's nice to finally add onto it with the younger Warner brother, Wakko. Wakko gets an expression fitting for the character, with tilted eyes and tongue hanging out, and his head is a solid hunk of a soft, vinyl-like material. The paint on it is pretty decent, but there is some fuzziness where the white face meets the black far and eyes. He gets an alternate head with an "ooohh" expression, but this one is also wearing a gladiator helmet. Don't recognize it? It comes from the episode "The Big Candy Store," where he and his siblings show up riding on top of a bus like a chariot...[See More]
Ultra Magnus
Transformers - Generation 1 (Hasbro) - Series 3
Rated 4.25 stars by Karl T. Face
Magnus was an interesting toy. We hadn't really seen any major upgrades to existing Transformers yet, and here was this white Optimus with a car carrier trailer that becomes an exo-suit. But that point has been discussed ad infinitum, so how's the toy? Right off the bat, mine's not in the best shape. Everything's nice and tight (worryingly so in some cases), the chrome is just near death. Which hardly matters to me, as it's only ever getting displayed in two modes; vehicle(s) and robot. In that order, we've got a very boxy car carrier here, with room for four cars. The rocket launchers stick straight out the front, but I haven't figured out what to do with the hands and rifle. I do know the helmet fits on the chestplate to form a sort of mobile gun emplacement. We get a pretty full range...[See More]
