Renet (Brown Clothes) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Mirage Comics (Neca) - Basic Series Rated 4.50 stars by RMaster007 The return of NECA's TMNT Mirage line feels like a blast from the past, adding on to figures that were released many years ago, so it makes sense that a time traveler joins the line. The plucky apprentice Renet, as far as I'm concerned, appeared in only the eighth issue of the comic, which for some reason had fellow indie comic character Cerebus the Aardvark.
Renet's sculpt is done by Jon Matthews, and her head is very accurate to how she appeared in-print. The default head has a neutral expression, and her cowl pulled up to cover her forehead. Her funky headwear, with a clock in the middle, is a separate piece, and it fits on pretty firmly most of the time. She gets an alternate head without the cowl, revealing her tomboyish hair underneath, and making her a bit more expressive. The...[See More]
Sealab 2021 (Debbie Dupree / Dr. Quentin Q. Quinn) Adult Swim (Palisades) - Series 1 Rated 3.55 stars by RMaster007 Before creating FX's immensely popular Archer, Adam Reed and Matt Thompson created a little show for Adult Swim called Sealab 2021. It did what Space Ghost Coast to Coast prior; take a Hanna-Barbera cartoon and spin it into a off-the-wall adult comedy. In the mid-2000s, it, along with a few other Adult Swim series, got the opportunity to enter the action figure world thanks to the sadly defunct Palisades Toys.
The packaging is simple, but nice. It's mostly black, resembling Adult Swim's traditional bumpers, along with a background relating to the show on the front of the paper insert. However, it's also a clamshell package, meaning you'll need an exacto-knife to get it open. At least the packaging helps protect the contents inside.
The unique thing about the Adult Swim line was that the...[See More]
Ray Fillet Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Super7) - Ultimates! Rated 4.75 stars by RMaster007 There's a lot of characters in the TMNT universe who, despite not being part of the major cast, have gotten plenty of recognition. Take Ray Fillet, for example. The mutant fish hero got a figure in the original line, was a regular in the Adventures comic and had some other print appearances, and was in one of the video games, but never showed up in any animated media (he came close to appearing in the Fred Wolf cartoon, though). Still, he's a somewhat recognizable character, hence why Super7 has given him the Ultimate treatment.
Standing around 6 1/2", Ray hasn't been changed too much from his original figure, with very subtle differences being present. The big grin isn't as crooked, but the head still looks very nice, especially with the shine on the eyes and teeth, the latter of which...[See More]
Last Ronin (Unarmored) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Neca) - Last Ronin Rated 4.90 stars by RMaster007 If you enjoyed The Last Ronin, there's a follow-up to it out now: The Lost Years, which takes place both before and after the events of Ronin. While I haven't read it yet, I hope to pick it up soon. In the meantime, though, I have gotten the other Last Ronin figure by NECA, sporting a different look.
The front of the packaging has a nice illustration that depicts a pivotal moment from the first issue, in which the Last Ronin comes close to taking his own life before passing out from his wounds. It's an attractive box that does the job well, and it's what you expect a NECA figure box to be, easy to open… once you get rid of all those plastic ties.
As the case is with the armored version, the unarmored Last Ronin is sculpted by Paul Harding, and shares a good chunk of parts with the other...[See More]
Doc Brown (1985 Version) Back to the Future (Neca) - Ultimate Collection Rated 4.75 stars by RMaster007 I'll admit I haven't really been collecting NECA's Back to the Future line. After I got Biff, I was somewhat satisfied and tapped out of the line. Back in the fall of '22, though, I came across a new release in the line while on the search for Ninja Turtle figures. I figured if I was to pick up something NECA at Target, it may as well be this guy.
The front of the box is designed after the plutonium case, coming from the scene where Doc has this specific get-up. It also specifies that this is the third Doc by NECA, not that that's really important, though. There's some tape and plastic ties to remove, and once those are out of the way, it's easy to get everything out.
Doc Brown's sculpt is done by both Jason Frailey and Kyle Windrix, but it's not specified who did what on the figure....[See More]
Deep Space Homer Simpsons (Super7) - Ultimates Rated 4.85 stars by RMaster007 Ever since its jump from mere shorts to a half-hour series, The Simpsons has been a merchandising juggernaut. Among the various items are a couple different toylines from companies like Mattel, Playmates, McFarlane, LEGO, and others, and in 2021, Super7 announced their acquisition of the license. The first wave of ULTIMATES for the show were due for release last summer, but as with most Super7 lines, they ended up being out a couple months late. They very recently showed up through Big Bad Toy Store, and Super7 should be shipping out direct orders soon, and I'm all the more excited to finally have one in-hand.
The packaging is the standard Super7 style: a brown cardboard box containing the trapezoidal box with slipcover inside. The box is around the same height as the TMNT figures, but a...[See More]
Accessory Pack Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - 1990 Movie (Neca) - Secret of the Ooze Rated 4.90 stars by RMaster007 If there's one thing that makes action figures more fun, it's accessories, and lots of 'em. NECA has put out a couple accessory sets recently, including a follow-up to their TMNT movie accessory set from '21. Covering its sequel, Secret of the Ooze, this set was also a NECA Store-exclusive preorder early last year, so unless you jumped on that, eBay is your best bet for it now.
The packaging isn't much different from the first accessory set, being a simple windowless box with photos of everything included on the sides and back. It's not much, but it does the job. On the inside, everything is secured in a plastic tray, no plastic ties or anything, making it all easy to remove and replace.
Kicking things off are extra heads for each of the four turtles. Leonardo gets a stern look,...[See More]
Neutrinos (3-Pack) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca) - Multi-Packs Rated 4.90 stars by RMaster007 I'll be honest, I'm not the biggest fan of the Neutrinos from the TMNT cartoon. Sure, they had cool designs, but their annoying voices and lingo were off-putting to me. Still, they were pretty important in the five-episode pilot season and continued to pop up from time to time, and that's why I wanted them to get the NECA treatment. My wish was granted a few months ago when they became the toon line's first three-pack.
Before we get on with this review, I just want to clarify: Zak is the blue one, Dask is the yellow one, and Kala is the green one. Now that that's out of the way, all three figures are sculpted by Paul Harding, who's been doing a lot of Turtle stuff recently. Everyone is really spot-on, from the funky clothes to out-of-this-world hairstyles. I'm impressed by how well Zak's...[See More]
4-Pack Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - 1990 Movie (Neca) - Secret of the Ooze Rated 4.95 stars by RMaster007 Go ninja go ninja go!
It's been over 30 years since Secret of the Ooze hit theaters, and it served as a pretty fun follow-up to the original TMNT movie. To celebrate its belated anniversary, NECA finally did the four turtles from it, and while they've been hitting Walmarts as two-packs for a good amount of time, they first showed up as a four-pack pre-order exclusively through the NECA Store, showing up last month. I'm glad I went that route, cause I can't find the two-packs to save my life.
The box, unlike most four packs, is tall rather than long and bears a nice recreation of the original VHS' cover on the front using the figures. That's actually on a slip cover that can be removed to reveal a window box inside. There's only one plastic tie each for the turtles, and most of the...[See More]
Someone's in the Kitchen with DNA (Troy McClure) Simpsons (Super7) - ReAction Figures Rated 4.05 stars by RMaster007 "Hi, I'm Troy McClure. You may remember me from such toy lines as World of Springfield, and… wait, that's it?"
The first wave of Super7's Simpsons Ultimates is showing up in the States any day time, and I can't wait. Until they drop, however, Super7 in the meantime put out some ReAction figures as an appetizer. They kicked it off with a wave of McBain figures, and now Troy McClure is getting the treatment, with three figures based off his various roles in-show. This particular variant comes from "Someone's in the Kitchen with DNA," which itself originates from season 9's "Lisa the Simpson."
ReAction card art ranges from "mildly attractive" to "absolutely stunning," and this one belongs in the former category. It has specific art depicting Troy in the various outfits he wears in this...[See More]
