I'd wanted figures from Welcome to Marwen for the longest time, ever since seeing the film, and reading about the documentary. I felt that it simply wasn't right of me to use the same mold of figures that the real Mark Hogancamp used for Marwencol, so I went about focusing on the stylized fictional versions shown in the film, patterned after Steve Carell, Siobhán Merritt Wever, Eiza González, Janelle Monáe and Leslie Mann. Parts were found at various locations and I pieced them together as painstakingly as possible, hand painting the scar on Hogie's face, and searching for headsculpts that gave as close as I could to the actor's appearance in the film. Hogie started out as Adler Augen by Dragon Models Limited Nicol started out as Claire from Jurassic World- I changed her to a redhead Barbie sculpt. Roberta started out as a CY Girl (Jet, I think) but had the head of a Old Joe Infirmary exclusive headsculpt, sold by OJI Toys. Carlala was a Barbie tall doll, on a Made to Move body. Julie was a Made to Move Barbie with the head from a Fashionistas Barbie- while neither doll had the right short hairstye, I didn't want to do a hack job of cutting up her curly locks, so I opted for a pulled back look. Another Barbie provided Julie's prosthetic leg- while in the film it's her right leg, because the donor Barbie's prosthetic was the left leg, I went wit that- the Made to Move body thigh rotation design mimicked the design of the Barbie that originally had the prosthetic leg- all I really had to do was cut down the retaining peg from the Made to Move doll's thigh, carve away some the vinyl from the inside of the prosthetic leg, and push the two pieces together- the prosthetic leg's cup fit nicely onto the Made to Move doll's cut down thigh. The prosthetic leg itself was a solid piece of plastic, but I cut along the molded on joint lines on the knee area, and made a pin from a piece of paper clip. The knee now bends on the prosthetic leg,as it should. Hogie's jacket and shirt originally Hasbro Classic Collection pieces- they've been replaced with a Ken Fashion Avenue shirt and a DML Ben Cole jacket, while his pants are Ken's. His boots were Action Man's- they've been replaced with DML boots. His cloth belt is a Hasbro Classic Collection belt Nicol's dress is from a basic assortment Barbie narrow boxed doll, and her shoes are Barbie's, from one of the bagged shoe packs. Roberta's outfit consists of a Barbie dress used as a tunic, Ken's shoes, and pants from an unknown source, possibly vintage knockoff G.I.Joe pants or Mego clone pants. Carlala's outfit consists of a t-shirt from a High School Musical boy doll, a skirt from a Kenya doll, and boots from Skipper. Her necklace was from a Cali Girl Barbie doll. Julie's outfit consists of a Barbie top, shorts and sneakers, while her jacket is from a vintage knockoff military doll. ![]() |
