Oh boy, where to start. I wanted to upgrade a 2007 30th Anniversary Y-Wing to give it all the new features Hasbro added to their 2011 Vintage Collection Y-Wing. First I cut off the top part of the 2011 cockpit so I could make a mold of it. I also made molds for the sidewalls of the cockpit, the pilot's seat, steering handles and retractable targeting computer readout. After making the first cast of the top of the cockpit, I cut out the instrument panel section so I could make another mold of just that area. Next I dremmeled out the instrument panel section on the 2007 Y-Wing, as well as the built-in droid, to change it into an open droid socket. I painted the extra parts after sanding the needed areas, enabling everything to fit together correctly. A little bit of cutting with an X-acto knife was needed in a few spots in the bottom of the cockpit so the new pilot's seat would fit (the base was slightly larger compared to the original chair). To finish the Y-Wing I assembled and glued the new instrument panel and sidewalls in place and used some Apoxie Modelling Compound to fill in some small gaps (with final light paint touch-ups). I then found a body to glue onto the R5-F7 droid head I had dremmeled off the top of the 2007 Y-Wing fuselage (a B.A.D. droid). Finally I painted Lepira's head and dremmeled into it so it would fit onto the Jon Dutch Vander pilot's body. A lot of time was spend with trial and error and making molds, so it will take far less time to make other conversions in the future. I might try it with other Hasbro Y-Wings, most likely the 2004 Original Trilogy Collection version. ![]() |
