I love when a simple, yet effective custom can get me a brand new character for the shelf. I also love doing the occasional obscure character like 8-Ball, but I think this one may be my most obscure character/figure yet. Here we have Midnight aka M'Nai, later known as Midnight Sun. He's also effectively the adoptive brother of Shang-Chi and step son of Fu Manchu. He's one of the foremost karate masters in the Marvel Universe, or he was until his untimely death. But not even death can stop him! Kang plucked him from the time stream to join the first iteration of the Legion of the Unliving, before he was eventually sent back just moments before his death. The Kree later revived his brain in a cloned body with enhanced powers and sent him after the Silver Surfer. I based this guy's look on his original appearances before the Kree brought him back to life, since it was those Avengers issues with him as a member of the Legion of the Unliving that first got me aware of and interested in him as a character (he made such a good villain for Mantis!). Recipe: Head, hands: Back in Black Deadpool Body, cape: Wal*Mart exclusive Classic Black Panther Arms (from the bicep down): Brother Voodoo Nunchucks: Hellcat Hat: Sculpt This guy was mostly a great big part swap, with the intention of there being little to no painting required and zero paint rub. I removed the Black Panther belt and put the Brother Voodoo arms from the biceps down onto him. I then replaced the hands with those from Back in Black Deadpool, as well as the head. I painted the face flat black and the eyes a glossy white for a very striking look. For the hat, I'd like to give a big shoutout to the Fwooh's Zombie13 for his hat recipe. Be sure to check the WIP thread and his own custom gallery for the full process. Basically, through some trial and error, I used the recent Biker Black Widow figure's box's plastic window to cut out an outline to go over Midnight's head. I put it over some tinfoil around the figure's head so the hat would be removable. I then used Milliput to sculpt the hat, hat band and buckle, and then sanded it up a little with a Dremel and sandpaper. I painted the hat flat black and the band and buckle a glossy black. The hat was definitely the hardest part of this custom, but a much needed part to complete Midnight's overall look. I'm glad to be able to boost the ranks of my villains, and the Legion of the Unliving in particular, as well as Silver Surfer's villains (along with my Mephisto custom) too. ![]() |
