I was kind of disappointed when I learned that they were going to be omitting Shuri from the Marvel Legends line, especially when she would be playing such a large role in the movie, as well as showing up in "Infinity War". I was reeeeeally disappointed she didn't get a figure after watching "Black Panther"; she was one of my favorite characters in the movie! I was fortunate to find one of the Shuri figures from the under-articulated kids' line, but man, even as a kid I would have been disappointed with that figure. They skimped out on her hair (it was horrendous) and even her face/war paint, so I had my work cut out for me, but this was a character I enjoyed so much, I knew I had to try and that it would be worth it. Recipe: Head, arms, panther gauntlets, skirt, chest/neck harness: Under-articulated Shuri figure Torso, legs: Okoye Braids: Shatterstar So, in addition to the under-articulated Shuri figure, I had a leftover Okoye torso from the extra Nakia figure I got for the shoulderpad. I ended up buying a Black Bolt for his head to make Sin-Eater. With that, I decided to buy the second leg, and scored one off of eBay. I originally planned to make her with Nakia's legs, but I wanted something a little more accurate to the source material. I used a drill bit on my Dremel to split the Shuri body open. I then shaved down the pegs on her arms, heated the Okoye torso, and popped them in. I also shaved down the torso on the Shuri figure until I was left with her chest/neck harness which was left in two pieces. Her head was a little loose on the Okoye neck peg, so I wrapped the ball peg with black electrical tape to make the head fit nice and snug. Speaking of her head, I had to extensively fix the hair. All they gave her was a handful of braids with huge spaces between them. So I used some Milliput, a toothpick, and a piece of tape-wrapped paper to sculpt her hair. I then glued one Shatterstar braid along the bottom of her bun, and another braid on her right-hand side to drape over her shoulder. I then painted her outfit blue in the appropriate spots, and made a darker, mustard-like yellow for the other costume details. I drybrushed yellow on her abdomen. I painted her hair tan, and then drybrushed black over it, and did the same for her Shatterstar braids. I painted her hair braid purple, and put purple in the bottom of her bun, but that didn't really show up, but I'm not worried about it, as I like how it turned out. I also painted the eyes on her panther gauntlets, teeth on her harness (which is part of the headsculpt), and few missing war/face paint dots white. Finally, I glued her neck/chest harnesses on. I added the appropriate blue in the spots that needed it, since they were left black for some reason. The peg on her skirt is glued in place, but easily removed and added to her figure. I painted the rings on the skirt silver. Shuri took a lot of work, but I think it was worth it to put her in my "Black Panther" and "Infinity War" displays, and I think she looks cool, too. ![]() |
