Telchar was a Dwarf of Nogrod in the Blue Mountains during the First Age. After apprenticing under Master Gamil Zirak, Telchar became a Legendary Master Craftsman. Telchar was commonly regarded amongst the greatest smiths of all times save only the Elves Fëanor and Celebrimbor. Among his many works were the knife Angrist, the sword Narsil (later reforged as the sword Andúril), and the Dragon-helm of Dor-lómin. Telchar created many items at his Forge in the Great Dwarven City of Nogrod. Nogrod was home to Dwarven House of the Firebeards in the Blue Mountains. The Firebeards of Nogrod traded often with the Elves and Men of Beleriand. They aided the Elven King Elu Thingol to delve the caves of Menegroth and helped with his treasuries and weapons. The Knife Angrist: Angrist was crafted by Telchar and it eventually came into possession of the Elf Curufin. The knife was taken by a man named Beren from Curufin and Beren used the knife to cut a Silmaril from Morgoth’s Iron Crown. The knife broke when Beren attempted to cut a second Silmaril and it cut Morgoth instead. Angrist was left behind when Beren escaped the Fortress of Angband. {Fan Fiction for Movie Connection: Though it is not recorded, some say the knife reemerged before the end of the First Age and it came into possession of the Elf Celebrimbor. Lord Celebrimbor then reforged the knife during the Second Age; then gifted it to Lord Celeborn and the Lady Galadriel of Lothlórien. The knife was gifted by Lord Celeborn in the Third Age to Aragorn, the future King of the Reunited Kingdom.} The Dragon-helm of Dor-lómin: The Dragon-helm was crafted by Telchar in the likeness of Glaurung, the Father of Dragons. It is said to have magical properties that protected its wearer and struck fear into the hearts of enemies. Telchar made the helm for Azaghâl, King of the Broadbeam Dwarves of the neighboring Dwarven City Belegost in the Blue Mountains. The helm could only be borne by one of great stature and strength. King Azaghâl gave the helm as a gift to the Elf Lord Maedhros; after Maedhros saved his life from an ambush by Orcs. The helm was eventually passed to the High King of the Ñoldor Elves who in turn gifted the helm to Hador, a great chieftain of men and first Lord of Dor-lómin. The Dragon-helm is last seen in possession of Hador’s legendary great-grandson Túrin. In battle Túrin wore the Dragon-helm and fought many Orcs of Morgoth in Beleriand. Túrin was monstrous in war and he called himself Gorthol, “The Dread Helm”. The Sword Narsil: Narsil was crafted by Telchar in the First Age. The Sword is recorded as an heirloom of the House of Elros, First King of Númenor during the Second Age. <Speculation from askmiddlearth about how Narsil went from being crafted by Telchar to being a Númenórean heirloom.> [Though it is not recorded, it is likely the sword came into the possession of the Elf Lord Maglor by way of trade with the Dwarves of Nogrod.] Maglor, a son of Fëanor (Fëanor, creator of the Silmarils) vowed an oath along with his brothers against any who would take a Silmaril and keep it from the House of Fëanor. After attacking and bringing about the Third Kinslaying because of a Silmaril; Maglor and his brother Maedhros came upon Elrond and Elros, the two young sons of Eärendil and Elwing. Maglor would not allow Elrond and Elros to be slain and in the absence of their parents Maglor took them into his house and raised them as his own. [Maglor then passed Narsil on to Elros.] During the Second Age, the Sword is passed down to Tar-Elendil, great grandson of Elros and fourth King of Númenor. Tar-Elendil’s first born is a daughter named Silmariën. Laws at the time in Númenor prevented women from ruling. Silmariën married a nobleman and her decedents became the Lords of Andúnië. Silmariën also inherited some heirlooms from her father including the Sword Narsil and the Ring of Barahir. These heirlooms are eventually passed down thru many generations to Elendil, the last Lord of Andúnië during the Downfall of Númenor. Elendil would go on to found the Kingdoms of Arnor and Gondor in Middle-earth. King Elendil wielded Narsil in the Last Alliance of Elves and Men before falling to Sauron. Narsil was broken but Elendil’s son Isildur used it to cut the One Ring from Sauron’s hand. In the Third Age; Narsil were reforged and renamed Andúril by the Elves of Rivendell for Aragorn, heir to the line of Elendil. ***Three Legendary Items seemed too short a list for such a renowned craftsman. The following weapons of legend do not say who created them. I like to think Telchar crafted them as well; therefore they have been added to this collection. *** The Great Axe Dramborleg: Dramborleg was a Great Axe wielded by Tuor during the First Age. Tuor, a hero of men and grandfather to Elrond and Elros used the Axe to kill Balrogs and Orcs during the Fall of Gondolin. Dramborleg became an heirloom of the Kings of Númenor and was lost in its downfall. The Bow of Bregor: The Bow of Bregor was a magnificent Bow used in the First Age by Bregor, Chieftain of the House of Bëor (House of Bëor is the oldest of the Three Houses of Men). Bregor is father to Barahir (The Ring of Barahir’s namesake); Bregor is also the Third Great Grandfather to Elrond and Elros. {Speculation and Fan Fiction: Though it is not recorded, it is said that Bregor was killed during the Battle of Sudden Flame and that before Bregor fell; his last arrow was released with such force that it traveled thru numerous enemies before pinning and killing a Fierce Orc Captain to the fortress wall of Angband itself}. It is recorded that The Bow became an heirloom of the Kings of Númenor and was lost in its downfall. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is no record of what became of Telchar and he is not mentioned during the events of the famous Nauglamír. The Nauglamír was a necklace crafted by the Dwarves of Belegost from treasures of the Elf King Elu Thingol. Once finished, King Thingol requested the Dwarves of Nogrod set a Silmaril in the necklace, making it the fairest object in the world. Ownership of the necklace caused bloodshed between the Dwarves and Elves. Telchar being a Master Smith would definitely have been involved with the Nauglamír if he was around but since he is not mentioned many believe he wasn’t alive during this time. For not having a great deal told about him, Telchar is a very interesting character. So here is some fan fiction to continue his story a little more. {Fan Fiction: For many years Telchar was offered by Durin, King of the Longbeards to come and take on apprentices at Khazad-dûm. To bring his legendary crafting skills to the Forges of Durin’s Folk. After losing so many of his friends including his close friend King Azaghâl during the Battle of Unnumbered Tears, Telchar decided to accept King Durin’s offer. Telchar's last creation in the Blue Mountains was a statue of King Durin; to give as a gift when he reached Khazad-dûm. The great dwarven smith traveled east from the Blue Mountains to the Misty Mountains; Telchar eventually married into the Durin Line by wedding a daughter of King Durin. Telchar’s forging skills were passed down and they greatly enhanced the craftwork of the Longbeards for generations to come. The Doors of Durin was built by two of the greatest craftsmen in the Second Age, the Elf Lord Celebrimbor and the Master Dwarf Narvi. It is said Narvi is a descendant of Telchar and that he used the Forging Hammer of Telchar when he built the Doors of Durin with Celebrimbor.} ************************************************************************************************************************ Telchar was made using: Head = Coronation Gimli (Painted Beard and Hair Charcoal Gray, then drybrushed Flat White.
