This is a 12” custom doll I was asked to make of Richard Chamberlain’s character from the Shogun tv series.


I was asked to use the 1960’s Richard Chamberlain (Dr. Kildare) doll as a base.



I started by sculpting him some new hair & a beard using a product called ‘fixit sculpt’. I kept the sculpt quite simple as I wanted it to fit in with the vintage look of the actual doll.

When the sculpt had set I painted it with brown enamel paints.



His costume was completely hand made. I had to do some research online to find out more about this particular style of samurai outfit, how they are made & how they are worn.



I then created my own pattern to fit a 12” doll. The most complicated part was creating all the pleats to make the bottom section of the outfit which are called Hakama.



The outfit was made from a cotton fabric which I painted the strips onto using fabric paint.



His socks are made from brown T-shirt fabric & his sandals are made from white faux leather with white ribbon straps that fit between his toes. (I drilled a space between his toes so as the sandals would fit neatly in place).



In my pictures he does not have his swords as the girl who ordered this figure bought the swords separately online & added them to the doll when she received him.
