As I said in my previous post (Gloin) I am doubling up customs at the moment and it went well as I made Gloin and Dori together. Again I used the corronation Gimli as a base and the Pelenor fields Aragorn arms shortened, boots from Hobbit Gandalf and the head is from super articulated Strider, special thanks goes to Bastila as she had the idea on her custom of Dori, it really is the best likeness to sculpt over. I sculpted the weapons and sewed the overcoat. I really wanted it removable as he has it on when traveling and off when he isn't so it made no sense to have it stuck to him. I hate sewing, you all know that, but it came out fairly decent. I sculpted the dwarf beer gut as usual, made him shorter than Gloin, sculpted the clothes and then painted. The braids and hair took a while but it wasn't difficult really. As I was making him the miliput being black made him look like a youngish samurai wiht a high hairline haha. The beard decoration is from Boromir's horn and the back hair one is from a Gimli axe.The Sword blade I sculpted and after the original handle broke I made a slit down a Thorin Sword and inserted the blade then reshaped and sanded down areas so it works much better being held. The Chain weapon (flail with 3 spiked balls) was made from a Gimli Axe handle, a brown shoelace, left over tiny chains I ordered years ago for my Dwalin's knuckle dusters and ring bearer necklaces, the rubber arrowheads cut off from Striders arrows and then jsut plstic I bent in half then cut triangles out of. All of this was glued together and some decorations were added then I painted the chains dark silver and the spikey balls rusty gold-silverish as that's how the look on the weta model and in the film. I also gave him a nosejob to get it wider and make it the right shape and some other changes. The absolute hardest part to sculpt was the vambraces as I smudged one and had to resculpt and they are so tiny and specific in shape. I would not recommend it unless you want it to look exactly like the real deal. I painted it and added some varnish to the eyes to give it a life like quality (I do this with all my figures unless they already have it) and voila Dori. Really happy with it, I really love the design and his 'mother goose' type character. This is my 9th Dwarf bringing me to 10 Dwarves ready (Thorin being 10th already made). Strange to be doing this, I always thought I'd get up to Gloin then give up making just Balin, Dwalin, Bofur, Bombur, Fili and Kili and then stopping as I consider these the important ones with Thorin being eitehr A team Dwarves as we keep saying or important relations with other characters like Gloin being Gimli's Father or Bofur's closeness to Bilbo and Bombur simply becuase your attention is gravitated towards him....why? He's the fat dwarf that's why haha. Anyway give me a month for the next two, Proud of this one and I hate sewing so much.... Please wait... |
