As much as I'd like to say Superman, G.I.Joe, or even He-Man were my childhood heroes, they all pale in comparison to the real life hero of my life, my mother. Without her, I wouldn't be here. I wouldn't be sitting here today, submitting this custom figure without her. In fact, my love of action figures wouldn't be here without her as part of my life. Growing up, I had many setbacks, drawbacks, obstacles, and hurdles to over come, both academically, socially, and physically. Throughout it all, my mother was by my side, helping me along, guiding me, being there for me. Some of it was tough love, and some of it was, indeed, giving me incentives to strive for, though not lofty goals like independence or financial success- what child yearns for that? No, those childhood goals were things like the Egon Spengler, or Tunnel Rat or Power Punch Superman that I'd been hoping for. If my physical therapy, homework, or other goals were met, I'd earn a trip to the local toy store, and a chance to make my horde of action figures even larger.
Super heroines like Wonder Woman, She-Ra, or Lady Jaye might have been on television and in the toy stores, but the real heroine for my childhood was never immortalized in plastic, until now.
I used a Liv Girl Alexis for the body, and the head from one of the Dolls of the World. I've forgotten which one- I want to say Chinese Empress, but all I really know is that it uses the Midge headsculpt and that I didn't have to do much to the head- the hairstyle was already a lot like hers. Her uniform is from a Medline promotional doll, while her labcoat and stethoscope are Barbie items. Her sneakers are from a BFC Inc. Club doll.
