Atlantis's Giant T-Rex, the reissue of the old Aurora Prehistoric Scenes. 36" long, 18" high. Of course it's obsolete now, in that dinosaurs didn't have scales (scutes) like a turtle, and other errors, but a fun model to make, very retro. Struggled to get him together. Supposed to be "Snap-Together', so you can move him like an action figure, but then would "Fall-Apart". Had to cut posts and clamp edge by edge, very tedious. Also filled all the gaps and carved new scute lines by hand. Carved the square scales down his belly to soften the edges. Also wedged a big rock in his backside before fastening the tail to give him weight and keep him bottom-heavy, to not topple over easily. Tail broke off from plain glue, so drilled long holes and slid in dowels gooped with Minwax Woodfiller (resin). For the mouth, I painted the two jaws and palette completely as separates, then assembled the head. For the gap at the back of the throat, I stuffed in a pink cloth, arranged it with a stick, then dribbled wood glue to firm it up. The eyes I painted as best I could: they really should be store-bought glass eyes. Tried for a long time to make him a realistic Devil Dinosaur red, as seen in the WIP, finally gave up and went with brown. Painted in three different shades, dark down to light, then drybrushed many times. Kept a paper towel handy to wipe if the paint ran or got too heavy. Lined each scute with brown and wiped to darken the lines, essentially a wash in each crack. Then Dullcoted. Then painted the eyes and claws so they'd keep their shine. Came out OK. Glad it's done. ![]() |
