So, I was looking for a character that I had not yet tackled from the DC Universe, and after re-reading issue #98 of Superboy from July of 1962, I realized that I had never done a figure of the Legion of Super-Heroes' adult advisor, Marla Latham, who when he made his first appearance with Ultra Boy in that issue, was wearing almost the exact same costume.
To do Marla Latham, I gathered the remaining parts I had left over from when I gutted a DC Universe Classics Ultra Boy for parts (don't worry, this was an extra, and not the one from my boxset), which was basically the lower body and legs and the arms (minus the hands), as well as the head of a Movie Masters Alfred Pennyworth, the torso of a DC Universe Classics Crime Syndicate boxset Johnny Quick, the belt from a DC Universe Classics Eclipso, and the hands of a DC Universe Classics Hourman. Now, with all the parts collected, I set about putting the figure together. First, I used brush and roller cleaner to strip the paint off of the Eclipso belt, and then filled in all the grooves on the belt with Tamiya Putty White. When the putty had hardened properly, I sanded the belt smooth and gave it a full repaint with Testors Model Masters Ogre Green, followed by two generous coats of Flat Clear, and then attached the now completed belt to the lower body. Next, I took my brush and roller cleaner and stripped the lightning bolts off of the Johnny Quick torso, and then commenced a full repaint of the torso with Testors Model Masters Insignia Red, followed by two generous coats of Flat Clear. When the paint and Flat Clear had dried on the torso, I attached the torso to the lower body. The next thing that needed to be done was the square, black collar. To do this, I mixed up a small batch of Green Stuff and applied it in the rough shape of a square around the neck. When the Green Stuff had fully set, I used my Exacto knife to trim it to shape, and then sand it with my Dremel and some sandpaper. Next, I repainted the neck and the Hourman hands with Testors Model Masters Skin Tone Warm Tint, which matched the skin of the Alfred head. When the paint on the hands and neck had fully dried, I painted the square collar with Testors Model Masters Flat Black. When the Flat Black dried, I gave the neck, collar, and hands two generous coats of Flat Clear. When the Flat Clear was fully dry, I attached the hands to the Ultra Boy arms, and then the arms to the torso. Next I took the Alfred head and gave the hair a full repaint with Testors Model Masters Flat White, followed by two generous coats of Flat Clear. When the Flat Clear was dry, I attached the Alfred head to the body. Lastly, with Marla Latham now fully reassembled, I glued a symbol onto the chest (the symbol was made by hand at a larger size, and then photocopied and shrunk to proper size...however, unlike previous hand drawn symbols I had done before, this was covered with a piece of glossy magic tape to protect it somewhat and was made to resemble the one worn by Marla Latham in Superboy #98). Once the glue I used to attach the symbol was dry, I gave the symbol four or five generous coats of Flat Clear, and TA-DA...Marla Latham, adult Advisor to the Legion of Super-Heroes as he appeared in Superboy #98!!!
Please let me know what you guys think of him, and as always, comments are appreciated.
