So, I was looking for a character that I had not yet tackled from the DC Universe, and after re-watching the DC Super-Heroes DVD featuring the 1960's adventures of the Atom, the Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkman, the Justice League of America, and the Teen Titans that were produced by Filmation, I decided to make a figure of the Flash as he appeared in those shorts, since his Filmation Animated costume was different enough from the standard Flash costume of the comics (in the cartoon shorts, there were no wings on the boots, he had yellow gloves instead of the red ones with the lightning stripe, he had a normal-looking yellow belt with buckle instead of the lightning stripe belt, and his symbol was ringed with a yellow outer stripe and the lightning bolt was partially reversed). To do the Flash, I took a DC Universe Classics Flash figure and using the boil and pop method removed his head and arms. With the arms removed, I took the arms from a DC Universe Classics Crime Syndicate boxset Johnny Quick (which I had previously removed the hands from), and attached them to the Flash. Next, I removed the wings from his boots, and then filled the hole that remained with Tamiya Putty White. When the putty had dried, I sanded it smooth and repeated those steps until the boots showed no sign that there had ever been a hole in the side. Next, I took the T crotch and belt from a DC Universe Classics Guardian figure, and repainted the T crotch with three coats of Testors Model Masters Insignia Red, followed by two generous coats of Flat Clear. While the new T crotch dried, I cracked open the existing T crotch on the Flash, and repainted his upper torso with the Testors Model Masters Insignia Red (to cover up his symbol and make it so that the upper body matched the T crotch). When the upper body dried, I gave it two generous coats of Flat Clear, and then re-assembled the body with the belt and new T crotch using a little bit of Testors Modeling Cement, which I then clamped together until the glue set. Once the glue had set, I attached the hands from the aforementioned DC Universe Classics Guardian to the Johnny Quick arms. With the Flash now fully reassembled, I glued a symbol onto the chest (the symbol was made by hand at a larger size, and then photocopied and shrunk to proper size...however, unlike previous hand drawn symbols I had done before, this was covered with a piece of glossy magic tape to protect it somewhat). Once the glue I used to attach the symbol was dry, I gave the symbol four or five generous coats of Flat Clear, and TA-DA...the Flash as he appeared in the 1960's Filmation Animated cartoon shorts!!! Please let me know what you guys think of him, and as always, comments are appreciated. ![]() |
