First, I have TONS of pics of the "work in progress" of this and lots more to show the features, but I'm limited to 4 uploads... bummer... :(

I wanted to make my son an 8' wide by 3' tall playset, built to scale for his 3.75" Marvel Universe figures. It was a Christmas present to him.

The name HBM CITY ("HBM" is my son's initials). Nothing too deep to look into there. Ha!

::::::RECIPE:::::::

BUILDINGS: I used some foam insulation board from Lowes and carved bricks. Tons of great tutorials for this on YouTube.

WINDOWS: I used some medium thickness clear vinyl from the fabric section of Walmart for a couple of bucks. Cut a jagged "X" in each window to make them crashable with no risk.

CRASHED CAR: I built a model car (police car), heated it with a high temp heat gun, used a block of wood to mash in the soft front end of the car, giving the crashed look. Then glued into place.

BREAKTHROUGH WALL: I cut a section out of the foam wall. Then cut that section into thirds. Implemented magnets. Now you can crash through the wall, magnetically snap back together and rebuild the broken wall to relive the adventure again and again.

BENCH: Found in the doll house section of Hobby Lobby.

DRAIN PIPE: I used a flex straw and painted silver.

SIDEWALK/STREET/STREET DRAINS: All carved.

SEWER LIDS: Some spare plastic pirate coins from my son's toys box, painted silver.

ROPE LADDER: This is actually a picket fence from Michaels art store (from the wood section).

PLASTIC BUILDINGS: Some Big Lots play sets I implemented. They are glued into place permanently.

* In addition, I used some thin wood for the bottom and back wall of the playset (behind/under the foam board) to provide support.

My sons have played on this playset hardcore EVERY SINGLE DAY for over a year now. The paint has begun to rub off. But the structure is still firm.

Enjoy! (wish I could show you more without paying to show you... ha ha)

Thanks for looking!

Can't wait to do another one.

Thanks! It's been a couple of years and its still hanging in there in pretty good condition and trust me.. my 3 kids still to this day give that thing a challenge. They play non-stop on that thing with their hundreds of Marvel Universe figures. It's really held up well. I Mod-Podged the whole thing which helped protect it. I wanted to expand it, but I don't have the space. Thanks for looking! I've posted another one or two dioramas and plan on making more eventually as time allows.

Oh Yeah! All 3 of my kids play with it every single day to this day. STILL!! TOTALLY worth the time making it. It could use some touch up paint here and there at this point though (wear and tear).

Ha ha! Thanks! My dad actually helped me make it for my son. Team work. We literally had like, 3 days to have it ready by Christmas eve night. So we had to move quick and I needed his help. So my son's "papa" helped meet the deadline! All good ol' fashion fun memories.

Well I highly suggest some foam board. You can get a huge 8'x4' piece and make lots of dioramas (especially smaller size ones). The insulation foam board and a few craft paint colors, you're looking at $25 for MULTIPLE dioramas. YouTube search for AL Figures dioramas. You will be very interested. I don't know this guy, but I was inspired.
