The Golden Age Green Lantern is back to stop crime... for good. This Green Lantern is.. Doiby? Charles Dickles, also known as Doiby Dickles due to the type of hat that he always wear, was a Brooklyn taxi driver. He considered himself to be a skilled street fighter and driver. Doiby met the Green Lantern after saving a fare, Alan Scott’s then-girlfriend Irene Miller, from attacking gangsters. Reaching their destination, Dickles unhesitatingly moved to save the Lantern from similar danger. In gratitude and recognition of his bravery, the Lantern asked Dickles to become his crime-fighting associate. (WriteUps_dot_org, C.McGlothlin/S.A.Andrivet) After some time working together, Doiby started up with the wrench. At first Green lantern enjoyed the fat man’s zany antics, but the little man became increasingly violent and inventive in his assaults, and Green Lantern knew that even criminals had the right to not be brutalized… THWOK! THWOK! The heavy, leaden pipe fitter’s wrench came down again. THWOK - schtk! This time, it came back wet with fresh blood. A small triangular piece of a man’s scalp, holding exactly seven black hairs was now dangling obscenely from the lower jaw of the tool. Hearing the noise, Green Lantern turned from the three tough con-men he’d been fighting. In horror, he shouts: “Doiby! For God’s sake, STOP man! Can’t you see he’s had enough?” Doiby Dickles: “Chee, Lantrin’, I guess I just got carried away. When I saw they was swindlin’ them old folks outta their war bonds, well, I just sawr red, I guess I did! What?!?" ...Say! Youse ain’t one o’ them bleedin' hearts, is ya?” (AgainWithTheComics_dot_com,2007, B.Hughes) The criminals that this duo had stopped kept being released as they had been brutalized and courts believed that they had suffered enough. Dickles then realised that Scott's powers originated from the ring that he wore as the Green Lantern and that he could enforce justice on criminals that would have a permanent benefit for society. One night, after a long time of fighting crime, Doiby asked if he could sleep on his couch as he had an early start driving his beloved taxi cab Goitrude the next day. As Alan was sleeping, Dickles approached him and struck him multiple times on the head using the wrench. Doiby then approached Alan's body and whispered 'T'is what's best for society'. Doiby then took his ring and quickly jumped into Goitrude and went home to retrieve his home made Green Lantern costume. Using the power within the ring, Dickles constructed multiple wrench knifes which were used to instill his 'justice' to any criminal that dared to make an offence in his town. ------------------------------- Hi Realm, I thank you for looking at this custom. I obtained my inspiration when trying to enter this character into the "Alternate Takes" contest, unfortunately due to work and studies I found myself with little time to dedicate to this great hobby of ours. Unfortunately due to this, I was unable to modify images taken of Doiby using resin made wrench knifes. I apologise for this missing image. The background story was taken inspiration from the works from the authors mentioned above. Once I read Brian Hughes take on the character I knew this contest was my opportunity to show an overlooked sidekick. Doiby was made using a basic Brodus Clay action figure with a modified Alberto del Rio head, some epoxy was added to figure to convey his iconic look. He retains all original articulation and joints were sanded to prevent joint rubbing. The figure was primed and painted using Citadel and Tamiya paints. This is my first time using an airbrush so discrepancies can be seen. I wish every entry good luck and happy customizing :) ![]() |
