Doctor Strange was always one of my favorite comic book characters and the only way I could make a model of him back in the mid ‘60s was to combine parts from several different model kits with a major original sculpt. Head: Aurora Mexican Caballero Chest/Back: Aurora US Marshal Arms: Aurora Dutch Boy Right Hand: Aurora John F. Kennedy Left Hand: Aurora Phantom of the Opera Amulet: Model car wheel cover Lower Tunic: Thin pieces vacuum formed over Aurora Three Musketeers Athos Sash: Vac formed over clay sculpt Legs: Revell Phantom Paints: Ulrich 410-M Styrene Of course Strange’s Cloak of Levitation required the most work. I started by sculpting the basic shape (without the collar) in clay. From that I made a plaster casting. That plaster mold was then used to make a vacuum formed copy. Fortunately, my job at Aurora gave me access to a small vacuum forming machine. (It was small by industrial standards, but a hell of a lot bigger that the Mattel toy I used for just about all my other vac formed bits!) The collar was cut from sheet styrene, curved and blended with the rest of the cloak. Completed in 1966. As with The Atom, I made two of these figures and gave one to a friend. ![]() |
