during the War of Kings storyline a terrigen bomb opened a rift in time/space that led to an alternate universe that had banished death with the help of ancient Lovecraftian gods known as the many angled ones. All the heroes had become corrupted by their influence. That is a very brief summary, you should really check it out if you are a fan of the cosmic side of the MU....or even if you're not.
