I'm a big fan of Pokemon. It's one of my favorite things in the world, hands down. However the action figures have been pretty lacking for the last 18 or so years since Red and Blue first came out. There is, as far as I know only 1 actual figure for Red, the character from the games that Ash is based on and frankly, I think it leaves a lot to be desired.

There are a few Ash Ketchem figures though, and the recent X&Y figure ain't bad. He's got great articulation and is pretty well scaled for Marvel Legends figures, compared to how tall you'd imagine a 12 year old is compared to, say, Captain America. When I saw him hanging in Target I snatched him up right away, however it took me a solid year to actually begin this project, mainly out of fear of ruining one of my favorite video game characters of all time.

I started by sanding him down completely and then cutting off the little crop of hair on Ash's forehead. Then I painted him up to match the Pokemon Trainer's clothing as close as possible. Ash's current anime outfit actually matches up pretty well, which I was surprised to see. It's not exact, but it's very close. The backpack attaches with a magnet. I attached some pouches to the sides from a Bucky Cap belt and then used some painted leather straps which just stick into the back of the pack itself. The little Poke... thing on his left strap I crafted and painted from some scrap parts I had laying around.

Personally, I love it. I've wanted a figure of Red since he first appeared in the Fire Red and Leaf Green remakes about 10 years ago and I'm quite happy with how he came out. Now all I need is for them to make that son of a gun Gary to create a rival to go with him.

While I am honestly flattered... I love this guy too much to sell it. Try it yourself! Ash and pikachu are still pretty cheap on Amazon and toys r us and 90% of the fun is making them. Isn't that why you're here? Go for broke and become a figure realm champion!

Dude I love this, and definitely feel the pain. I snatched up two of these, the first custom I hope to have up in a day or two when I finish the paintwork. Great job.

Can't wait to see them. I think the upcoming teenage "ultimate spider-man" figure from Hasbro might be perfect for a Pokemon trainer, as long as they come with unmasked Peter and Miles heads. No particular trainer, just a Pkmn trainer in general.

Neat, I never see pokemon stuff pop up. Thats one tough looking trainer!

Man, don't get me started on Pokemon figures, im still pissed at how expensive the articulated Jazwares Eeveelutions are. For a kids show, there sure are a lot of douchebag scalpers out there hoarding the popular figs.

Also I still have no idea why no one has released articulated human characters from this series. Id have Brock and Bruno in a bro-down on my shelf so fast haha

It is a bit odd. There are 6 main series games with 2 protagonists (male and female) and at least 1 rival each, not to mention the 3rd edition games that usually have an alternate costume for the main heroes. These characters alone could fill a line. Then you have the gym leaders, the bad guy leaders and henchmen, the elite 4 and the professors. There's a rich history of humans to draw from, each of which could come with one or two signature pokemon. Pokemon toys are usually just 2 inch tall statues and maybe that's enough for most people, but I really think they have an untapped gold mine on their hands.

Thanks. It was a pretty easy transformation, considering Red and Ash are based on one another. I prefer the game character designs over the cartoon's designs though.
