Gears of War Ultimate Edition is probably going to be my favourite Xbox One game for a long, LONG time. It's not just the crisp, cinematic campaign, or the liquid smooth 1080p, 60fps Multiplayer experience. Hell, it's not even the buckets of glorious 2015 gore splashing on the screen. Its actually how each character has been amazingly redesigned from scratch as a fresh start for a new generation of Gears of War players. Easily the most noticeable, has to be favourite villain, the monstrous General RAAM. I just HAD to make a custom out of him. I started off my removing the head from my broken S5 RAAM (Sad, I know...), and luckily had a spare Palace Guard that just looked awkward in dioramas and scenes. I removed his head, and put it aside for any future customs, and attached RAAM's own. The reason behind using a Palace Guard, was the large, bulky gauntlets are EXACTLY like the ones RAAM has in UE. I then removed both RAAM's shoulderpads, and the Palace Guards, and replaced them with RAAM's. (Still with me?) I used a small amount of Games Workshop's green stuff to make the new 'crown' that RAAM has, this time, it not simply covering the back of his head, but quite literally encompassing all of his jawline, like a brace. I moulded it into the right shape, and used a knife to carve in the details. I also bulked up his shoulder pads, by placing the snipped ends of a Hammerburst cartridge on each side of the shoulder pad, before forming an arch (Couldn't think of a better word) in the centre. I used a small amount of green stuff to craft metal buckles on the straps of his biceps. Now, another awesome thing about UE RAAM, is that the only part of his skin on display, is his face, so that meant the entire body had to look like it was wearing a leather jumpsuit. It wasn't necessary to use copious amounts of green stuff, so instead, I simply painted all his skin (Yes, even his face) black. He also now wears large gloves, so I trimmed his claws, and used green stuff to form some overlapping metal plates on each finger. The paint job was more simple than I had expected, using a very fine layer of brown glaze (Seeing as his armour now has a dark, brown tinge) over the armour. After drying, I inked it further black, so he still had his jet-black armour, but still bore a brown hue, before dry brushing it with a dull steel to give it a metallic and worn effect. His skin was completely re-painted, using a dark grey as the base coat before dry-brushing it with Citadel's Fortress Grey. The eyes were painted with a small mix of Mephiston Red and Troll-Slayer Orange. The pupils were just Troll-Slayer Orange. I inked RAAM's skin with Nuln Oil, and his teeth were painted with Privateer Press Jack Bone, and inked Seraphim Sepia. Now, his sword had two issues. One, it had broken, and two, it was too small to even be called a knife. it was more of a pathetic prison shank made from a toothbrush. (Breaking Bad reference ftw!) So I decided to give him a sword he needed, and trimmed a Butcher Cleaver (From the GoW3 S3 Savage Theron) into the shape of his serrated sword, before completely re-painting it. I also repainted a Boltok to the in-game colours for him to use. But another touch I decided to add, was the ability to stow his sword. Melting a section of the plastic on both the sword hilt AND RAAM's back, I glued in two small, but very powerful magnets. Now RAAM can holster his sword like a ninja whilst he's crushing heads. Be sure to keep an eye out for the Theron Elite's remastering. RAAM would be nothing without his feared cohort of hissing murders... ![]() |
