In the process of building my G'nort Green Lantern figure, I destroyed a LOT of figures. Some of them I knew I'd be able to use the parts for later, but with many of the severed dog heads in particular, I knew there wasn't much I could do with them. So this was what happened when I decided to put a bunch of spare parts that would otherwise go to waste, to use. Using the unwanted pieces from various figures I've destroyed in the process of building various custom figures, I decided to build a few residents of G'newt, G'nort's world. You could consider these figures, or you could consider these scenery, since these would essentially play the same role as a film extra, not really intended to be showcased individually, but rather, inserted into the background to help enhance the environment. So, y'know, if my Green Lantern Corps was going to go to G'newt, I'd be set. First off is "Poopy" Rodriguez. (My girlfriend's kid named him.) I used the leftovers of a Starting Lineup figure I'd hacked the head off of to build a custom Static figure, and one of the early dog heads I'd hacked off while trying to find the right look for G'nort. I used what was left of the figure's original neck joint, glued it to the dog head, and then painted the head, arms, and tail to match. The tail, I hacked off of one of the many decapitated dog figures I have lying around, built a joint for it, and put in the back of the figure. Like with my G'nort figure, the tail is both poseable and removable. In retrospect, I suppose I could have made it with a permanently attached joint, but it's not like it's going to fall out on its own anyway, so it really doesn't matter. The original Starting Lineup figure had a figure stand permanently attached to the leg, so that the figure was perpetually sliding on the field to make a catch. I hacked that off, sanded the area smooth, repainted the area, and drilled in a small hole so I could use a standard removable figure stand instead. I've often resented the fact that the industry standard for action figure stand pegs shrunk down from 1/8" down to 3/32" as they're not as reliable, and have a tendency to pop out of feet more often, but they do have some advantages. The smaller size means not making much of a noticeable mark on the action figure's body. I also took advantage of the situation and drilled a second hole into the figure's foot, so that he could be posed as if standing, as if catching a ball. I sculpted "dog poop" onto the foot, which helps stabilize the figure and gives the peg stand more to grip, although it stood prior just fine. It also reinforces the somewhat comedic nature of G'newt's people... there's a certain irony in a dog-man stepping in carelessly discarded dog poop while making a game-winning catch. Of course, that got me thinking, is there dog poop on G'nort's world? What would make it? Certainly the dog-men wouldn't crap on the ground, G'nort once famously got lost on the Manhunter homeworld for three months, attempting to find a bathroom. Do they have an equivalent species for dogs? This led to me creating THE UGLIEST DOG IN THE WORLD! The body consisted of the dog body I'd hacked the head off of to make my G'nort figure. The body's sculpt seemed too nice to let go to waste, so I sculpted on a new tail, having hacked off the old one to put on G'nort. I wanted to go with a humanoid head on the dog's body since it came from a planet of dog-men, and I quickly determined my severed Kilowog head fit perfectly, and made a good match. Since I had no plans of ever using that hideous abomination of a head anyway, I built a neck joint for it, put it on the dog body, and painted the whole thing to make it all match. Last, I have Wolfgang Entwistle. He's constructed out of the leftover limbs from the "Ted" Theodore Logan figure I'd dismantled in building G'nort, the leftover torso from Allen Carr, also destroyed in building G'nort, and another dog-head I'd hacked off early on while attempting to find a good head for my G'nort figure, this one coming from a Disney property, Little Mermaid, I think, though I could be wrong. As I mentioned before in my write up for G'nort, the Bill And Ted figures weren't designed according to the typical Kenner standard, due to their action features, so that meant all the limbs needed to have joints built for them. I also built a joint into the dog head, and after that, the head and limbs all fit nicely into the Jurassic Park torso. I painted the parts to match first, then sealed the torso back together, and then of course, hacked off another dog-tail from one of the bodies, built a joint for it, painted it, and put it in the back of the figure. Again, the tail is both poseable and removable, but not coming out without a heck of a good tug. I really like the way this figure came out, and the "Save the Humans" patch on his leg has a certain awesome unintended humor to it as a result of the repurposing. I just wish I had a bass to take advantage of the figure's awesome look. Bottom line, I took junk that was just taking up space and served no purpose, and made it into a few figures I really rather enjoy. Mission accomplished! ![]() |
