Way back when I was growing up in the 1950s there were several space themed programs on TV (“Tom Corbett, Space Cadet”, “Captain Video”, “Space Patrol”, “Rod Brown of the Rocket Rangers”, etc.). These shows generated lots of officially licensed toys and merchandise and plenty of generic stuff designed to cash in on the very popular space theme. Action figures hadn’t been invented yet. The spacemen back then were mostly unpainted, one-piece figures molded in hard styrene or soft polyethylene. Clear space helmets were usually the only accessory. Robot “A” (my identification) is one of the styrene space figures made by Lido in the early ‘50s. There were eight different robots and aliens in this series. They were sold in groups and were also available in large playsets, notably tied into the “Captain Video” television show. I never had all of them when I was a kid, but I was able to get some of them not too long ago through eBay. No modifications were made to the figure except cutting off the base and sanding the parting line. The devise on my new display base is an assemblage of chrome bits from car kits plus a Lite Bright peg. The floor was cut from a sheet of Evergreen tile. Completed in 2011. ![]() |
