This one almost feels like cheating. Anyone who knows the Green Lantern Hannu from the comics knows his design and his costume bear a crazy amount of resemblance to the version of Thing from the Fantastic Four movie. I don't think there's any deliberate plagiarism going on here, as the character existed (and was doing his thing during Emerald Twilight) long before those awful Fantastic Four movies came out, and it's not like movie Thing bears a lot of resemblance to comic Thing, so it's just one of those very strange coincidences. All that said, the Fantastic Four Movie Thing figure is perfect for use as Hannu, with virtually nothing more than a bit of repainting needed. You don't have to swap limbs or anything. I suppose I could have built up his jaw a little, but I really hate that George-Lucas-neck thing a lot of artists draw him with. Just looks terrible. The Thing figure is built with an action feature where he puffs his arms up like a middle-schooler looking to fight, and this is controlled by a pullstring on the back attached to a "4" tag. I didn't have use for either the pullstring and tag, nor the rather pointless gesture, so the first thing I did was cut the tag off. This caused the pullstring to fully retreat within the body. All that was left was a tiny hole, which I patched and covered with a tiny bit of Magic Sculpt, making the back look like a normal, unblemished, silicon-based lifeform's back. With the body ready, I then pulled the head off so I wouldn't miss anything on the body while painting. Once I had the head, chest, and arms painted in a nice shade of gray, I headed out to the local hobby shop to locate a wash, which was something I'd heard of, but never had any experience using. It seemed the best way to get into those rocky cracks. This made the figure a darker gray than I had intended, but he looked really interesting and cool, so I didn't really care. It came out looking pretty good, except for on the figure's right arm, where the wash seemed to be working backwards for some reason, avoiding the cracks and showing prominently on the scales. Once that was all done, I painted up the pants and boots, and when those were dry, I placed on Hannu's Green Lantern logo. I reattached the head and gave the figure a spray of Dullcote, and then a spray of acrylic sealant. Whatever the problems had been with the wash on his arm, this seemed to magically fix it. Now that the whole figure was finished, I realized I'd forgotten probably the single most important part of any Green Lantern. I'm not going to give out any hints, this should be obvious. Anyway, I sculpted a nice big ring onto his big fat fingers with magic Sculpt, then I painted it up, and gave the arm one more quick spray with acrylic sealant. Then he was done. he came out pretty good overall, the only thing really lacking with him is the poor range of movement in his arms that Hasbro gave him... I can't really pose him to show off his ring. Otherwise he still retains his full range of movement. I'm usually pretty anal when it comes to scaling my figures properly, but Hannu was listed as being 10 feet tall, which would pretty much put the majority of the Green Lantern Corps staring face to face with his crotch all the time, and I've never seen him drawn to actually convey that kind of size, so I was okay with scaling this one down. ![]() |
