This was one of those situations where I was so thoroughly disappointed by how far the movie version of a character had deviated from the comic character, I decided to build my own. I'd already bought the 6 inch version of G'Hu on accident, and since I already had the 4.5 inch version of G'Hu satisfying the inaccurate film portrayal in my collection, I decided to build a more accurate version of G'Hu using my 6 inch figure. I started wrapping up his tendrils with masking tape so that he would only have two large tendrils, as he does in the comics. Most Green Lanterns have very humanoid bodies, while the movie went absolutely out of its way to make all the alien lanterns as alien as possible, and G'Hu was no exception, so I ended up chucking his body. I watched on Ebay for a while until I was able to get a cheap Nightcrawler figure, in this case, the light-up version, as the limbs seemed to match pretty closely. I was trying to figure out what I was going to use for the body, and initially I was planning on using the Kilowog body I ended up using for Green Man, but there was a lot of areas left lacking with that. For one, the body would have looked too squat and bulky, and G'Hu has more of a slender body type, and the stylized Timmverse build of the Kilowog body would have meant a bunch of sanding down to make seemingly match the Nightcrawler limbs, and even then, I wasn't sure that would come out well. Then I remembered the Northstar figure I had sitting out in the garage. I'd already destroyed Aurora to make Boodikka, so using up the Northstar figure made perfect sense. The body was slightly taller, which satisfied G'Hu's height, while still maintaining a healthy, slender look, and it had the smooth lines of a normal body, instead of a weird-ass Timmverse body. I threw Northstar into a pot of boiling water and got to the process of manually disassembling him. I put Magic-Sculpt around G'Hu's head to even it out and make it look much more like the comic version. I also chopped off the excess from his neck joint and then built my own neck joint using the head of a nail, carefully measured to properly fit the torso. I then had to make Nightcrawler's arms fit the Northstar body. The legs had been no problem, but the arm joint styles were different, with Nightcrawler having standard swivel arms, while Northstar had better articulated ball joint arms. So I built new swivel joints on the Nightcrawler arms, measured to properly fit the body, then I filled in the Northstar arm sockets, so that the attached arms had a proper swivel-type motion. Then I painted up the body and limbs with G'Hu's Green Lantern uniform, which came out beautifully, then I had to figure out how to flawlessly do his chest insignia. I eventually figured out how to do it using a combination of Letraset dry-transfer white circle decals, white paint, and a Green Lantern nail decal. Then the body just sat for a while. I was pretty much ready to finish, but I didn't have any purple paint. While painting the ring on his hand, I suddenly realized my finger count was off. G'Hu has three fingers and a thumb, while Nightcrawler only has two fingers and a thumb. While I probably could have gone back to searching for the right set of arms, at this point the paint looked so perfect on the arms and body, I didn't really want to mess with it. As it was, the hands looked good, and I doubted anyone would notice. The feet were dead-on, though. I found some purple paint, painted up the head, and finished the thing. I don't think I ever bothered to glue the body back together, it holds together pretty well on its own. Later on, I sculpted on an actual ring using Magic-Sculpt, just to make it look better. Overall, the figure came out pretty well. I could only find one reference picture to work from the entire time I was working on him, which is part of why the finger count got by me. Also, the little horns on his head should be pointed inwards a bit more, but I didn't notice that until long after I was done, when I found a second picture of him by accident. G'Hu is supposed to stand about 7' tall, and scale-wise, he's about right. If I was going to do it again, I might start from scratch when making the head, but otherwise, I'm happy with how he came out. The figure retains his full articulation, though the tentacles noticeably limit his neck movement. ![]() |
