My general philosophy in customizing is to make characters or essential versions of characters that the toy manufacturers do not make in order to fill out my collection. In my mind, Red Skull should be in a modified Nazi uniform. I used the same recipe that has been used by nearly everyone else, but with some small tweaks. The base is that WWII Ultimate Captain America for the uniformed body, and the head is the Marvel Legends Face Off Red Skull. The base had two problems, though: the boots weren't proper knee-high wellington boots but boot spats, and the body came in at half a head shorter than my Captain America (which didn't seem right if they're supposed to be an even match.) My solution to the two problems was to use the lower legs from the figure that the head came from. I also wasn't satisfied with the range of motion with the base's ball-joint neck, so I cut it off, drilled it out, and used the neck from the Face-off Red Skull as well. Instead of satisfying myself with a simple black paint job, I gave him different textures of black (matte and gloss) for different textiles, red piping wherever it felt appropriate, and I liked the look of copper for the metal accents (rather than gold or silver.) In the photos, he's wearing movie Nick Fury's jacket, and holding Dr. Doom's Luger. I'm quite pleased with the result overall. ![]() |
