Hello my Fellow Realmers! This is the first of two submissions today, which were made for a 'Brotherhood of Evil Mutants' Set. This is the Second Version of "Mastermind: 1st Appearance Version" that I am posting to the Realm. The recipe for this is the same as the first, but this one features a new 100% Original Headsculpt (and Alternate Head). As many of you probably know, Mastermind's Mutant Ability is the power of illusion, which he uses on an almost constant basis to make himself look more attractive to the people around him. I find this the most interesting aspect of his character, So this figure comes with a 'Handsome-Masked by Illusion-Head' (Modified Johnny Depp Head) like the original figure posted here and now he also comes with an All new 100% Original Sculpt 'Real -Unmasked-Head'. To me, his new head is his Primary head. I wanted his new head to capture the way he looked in his first appearance issue, Uncanny X-Men (vol.1) #4. I really wanted to be true to Jack Kirby's illustrations, but to take that image and make it real, the way he would look in real Life. As a side note, This figures posture (with the new head), the proportions of head-to-body and sort of the "vibe" I hoped to capture a little bit too, was inspired by F. Murray Abraham's portrayal of Antonio Salieri in "Amadeus". I felt a character who used his power to constantly make himself appear better looking to those around him might have some personality traits in common with Mr. Abraham's amazing portrayal of that character/individual. I hope you all like it! ![]() |

The sculpting is superb in this one. The shape of the head, wrinkles all over the face, the tired but conniving look in his eyes (how often do you hear someone comment on the "look in the eyes" of a figure?),...
Those pursed lips, the bushy eyebrows, that downturned mustache and especially the highly detailed hair. He did that sort of Kirby/Ayers single hairs comb-over bangs effect. I also HAVE to comment on the ears again (I keep commenting on the ears of each Davey Blaze creation). The ears on this older head are really well placed and unique. I looks like he has taken time to have them detailed and sticking out to be noticeable at every angle. This is an artist who knows how important good placement of ears is on a figure. If these ears were not as large or prominent, this would be a completely different figure. He would not look the same.
Also have to say that although it doesn't show enough in the pictures, the way his head is sculpted when facing forward it is cocked slightly to one side,.. giving it the impression of some kind of damage, like he might have at some point had a broken neck that he is somehow trying to mask. The head cocked to one side gives him a down turned look of someone protecting a weak side or in some way a twisted character. But if you turn the head to the side, he looks upward (it just swivels that way) as if he is a powerful leader posing for a portrait of greatness. The same features,... different attitude. I have to just comment again on amount of detailing on the face and head. It really presents so much care and commitment by the artist to see all of those little wrinkles, shadings and crevaces on a face, hair and head. It looks like he has taken great time and care to make this figure as lifelike and realistic as possible. And every feature layered in is only there to add to the overall look and effect.
I may sound like I'm heaping great praise. But you should see Davey Blaze creations next to regular action figures. They are just extraordinary!!!
