Sandman (Spider-Man) Custom Action Figure
Custom #:6242
Name:Sandman
Custom Type:Action Figure
Toy Series:Spider-Man
Creator:ClarkParker
Date Added:February 19, 2008
Base Figure:Sandman
Height:8.00 inches
To create the Sand Vortex, I used paper Mache over a tornado shaped dessert glass. I added extra layers on the high points to really make it pop.

While that dried, I took sand was taken from my kid's sandbox, I used a sieve to filter out only the smallest grains possible.

I mixed a few drops of yellow food colouring into the sand and stirred, then I put the sand in the oven on low heat, to dry it out quickly.

I cut the Vortex mold off of the glass from the back and glued the seam back together, I sized it to Sandman's waist and used Mack Tack to hold him in (It holds strong but I can remove him, if I ever need to)

Next, I painted the mold with glue and sprinkled the sand all around it, touching up as I needed to... I also painted the limbs with glue and added the sand to them... And finally, I lightly brushed his torso with small amounts of glue, mostly along his muscle lines and added some sand to that too.

As usual, awesome job. I've said it before, but it looks amazing. I doubt I'd ever do something like that myself, because it seems far too tedious for me, but it's awesome nontheless.
And don't worry about dremmeling, it's pretty easy once you get all the heads for different appliances.
The best thing to do would be to make sure you know exactly what pieces you'll be using for a custom, and buy extra pieces. Depending on what figure you use, I could be costly, but most loose figures you can get for cheap on a website. It's always best to have extras, and to have a custom parts bin, filled with random figures and figure parts for various custom jobs.

Sandman looks great, the ripple-effect on the sand-pillar is realistic.
Thanks. The more I look at some of these customs, the more I want to try some myself... There are a couple Cats on here that make better figures then most of the official lines. I mean, this Sandman is cool and everything but I it's not like I took a Dremmel to him or anything... But.... After reading the recipe for a Yellow Daredevil on here, I found that the makers had put magnets in his feet. I just happend to have a bunch of small magnets from one of my kid's broken toys, so I summoned up the courage and dremmeled out some big enough holes into my Symbiote Spidey and Daredevil's feet and glued in the magnets.... So yay. Your sight inspired me to make my first actual customs... Sort of... They are a lot cooler now, so there is that. I've got some black magnetic strips, to hide strategically throughout my model City. The idea was just to give my Spider-Man, who already has magnets, a place to stick to the walls... Now I think I'll use the system to open up posing possibilities for a bunch of my figures.

Oh Hey! That was quick.
I know this is not exactly a custom on a level of some of you Cats but I love this figure.
If I ever redo it, I'd use Paper clay instead of Mache.
