For the most part, I've been a DCUC custom purist. I've really tried avoiding using base figures that weren't from DCUC or related lines to build my DC collection. Lately though, I've started making a few customs whose appearance necessitated using bases that weren't possible using any standard DCUC buck.

Well, I was already making Johnny Thunder & Thunderbolt, so it seemed like I should make Jakeem Thunder as well. To make him I used a Hunger Games Rue figure that I picked up at Toys R Us for a mere sixty-cents on clearance (I figured if it didn't work out I didn't waste a lot of mmoney). Basically, I removed the hair, added some sculpt to bulk up the chest and jawline (since Rue is a female figure), sculpted a baseball cap, added some DCUC Black Lightning ears, and painted. Even though he's not exactly a DCUC figure, I think appearance wise he's more than acceptable for my display.

Thunderbolt was created using a DCUC Mercury with the legs removed. The chin and nose were sanded down, and the thunderbolts on his head came from a Marvel Legends Storm base. The lower-half of Thunderbolt came from the water-spout from the base of a six-inch Young Justice Aqualad. It's an idea I thought might work well, and I'm actually really happy with the results, especially considering he can still turn at the waist.

The great thing about the JSA (pre-Nu52) was the legacies of characters. From the Justice Society, to the All-Star Squadron, to Infinity Inc, to the more recent JSA All-Stars, there are a myriad of great legacy characters that sadly no longer exist in the comics. But they're all worthy of my shelves, and hopefully they'll all eventually appear there.

Long live the Justice Society of America!

Oh, and thanks for stopping by! (But mostly, stay classy, San Diego)

Jakeem is such a cool figure. I really enjoyed what they did with him in the JSA book. Seeing your custom brings back good memories of one of my favorite books.

Brilliant use of the HG Rue figure! I, too, picked up a couple when they were on sale for less than a buck!

Thanks. I should've bought more, but they were gone when I went back. Think the head would be great fir a Photon/Captain Marvel.
