I stumbled upon one of Julia Wertz's graphic novels while loafing around in my local Barnes and Nobles. I was bored and thumbing through graphic novels when her book stood out to me. As soon as I started reading it I was glued in one spot for the next 45 minutes cracking up like a lone fool. Her books have such an honesty quality to them that it almost feels like she's channeling stand up comedy through her comics. I love her comics and highly recommend them if off beat independent comics are your cup of tea. The actual "story" behind this piece is this: Julia has stopped making full blown comics for a little over a year and has since taken up other creative endeavors. She now explores abandoned buildings, mental hospitals/theater houses/theme parks etc.. She takes beautiful photgraphs of these places and has now amassed a large photo collection. The idea here with this sculpture was to depict her comic version of herself engaged in her current lifestyle of urban exploring. This custom/statue was made using wire, masking tape, sculpey, apoxie sculpt, bossa wood, styrene and various types of paints. Thanks for checkin it out!! ~ Kevlar ![]() |
