When Puerto Rican geologist Ernesto Manuel Perez fell into a crevice during a field study in the mountains of El Yunque (in Puerto Rico) , he barely survive the fall , with a broken arm and two ribs badly hurting he's chances of survival are slim , not only that , the cave in witch he fell is a subterranean one , very deep within the mountain range and completely unexplored , so he decides to use all his knowledge and some instinct to try and reach help , almost about to collapse from the pain , a voice and a very dim green light compels him to continue forward , to his surprise he finds a small ancient shrine (way older than any pre-columbine culture ever found in the island before) , as he approaches he sees in its center a round green crystal mirror and picks it up , at once a warm light envelops him completely and heals all his wounds completely and at the same time his heart and mind become one with the mirror (now hanging around his neck as a medallion) , A sweet and motherly voice tells him that she is the Spirit of the Earth , Gaia , and that she has been waiting for a long time for the Next Guardian to rise and protect the planet from destruction (because the shine was lost , no guardian has been assigned and thus all the great disaster true the years) and restore balance , he would be one of four champions of nature , and now his first priority would be to find the next two , however the third had already awaken decades before and corrupted by the power had chosen a darker path , so in order to fully restore the planet , he must be defeated and his talisman recovered and re-awaken with a worthy champion , like him , overwhelm and still confused but very grateful , he agrees , returning to civilization he tells everything to his wife Mirna , and with her help (she's an electronic engineer) they create a power damping suit in order to regulate and better control the medallions power of electromagnetism , choosing the name E.M.P.
