Here is my version of Grandus. He is a character that has grown on me over the years, and I always wanted to make a BIG aircraft carrier kitbash. It is a bit of a shell former, but I made sure that all of the parts do fit onto him in both modes. I think it is fitting because he is truly MASSIVE. He displays better w/o all of the pieces (just like all the other base-formers!). He is made from Energon Omega Supreme, Cybertron Supreme Starscream and Primus, an aircraft carrier toy, and a KO oversized Superion head I got in a junk lot a while back (happened to be perfect for Grandus!). It took some work to attain some symmetry with the arms and legs given that the Omega parts were asymmetrical. The knee joints were reworked to fit Starscream's legs, Omega parts were added to Starscream's feet to make them wider, an extra right Omega arm was put on back wards to become a left arm. He ends up being taller than Omega Supreme or Supreme Starscream. Thankfully, Omega happened to already have a clamp right hand. Tank treads from a PCC were attached to the shoulders. The aircraft carrier took considerable work to hollow out, cut into pieces, and put back together again with resin. The front of the deck becomes a shield that attaches to a modification on the left arm. The mid portion of the deck is attached to the Primus backpack. It splits apart (I saw another board member do this and couldn't think of a better way) and folds up with hinges and magnets to secure it. The back pack attaches to his back in robot mode with a hook and magnets. In carrier mode, it has to be turned around and attaches to the back of his legs with magnets. The hull and control tower pieces fit together with magnets and secure to both the deck pieces and Grandus' body via magnets. Grandus basically lays down on his chest and the hull parts fit on to him with magnets, the feet tuck into the hull, the forearms rotate around, and the hands clamp to hold the hull in place. The parts fit secure enough that they are self supporting when the carrier is lifted. I added a "wall" panel on the inside of his chest and some stickers I had to make it look like the interior of the base mode. The additional gun and mechanical arm attach via magnets. He is painted with an air brush and Krylon spray paints. I don't normally use spray paint cans, but the surface area was too much for an airbrush! I tried to match as much of Grandus' color scheme as possible with out compromising the aircraft carrier. The clamp hands and forearms are part sliver and turn to the outside for the carrier mode. I left a few red highlights on the carrier as homage to the original. The paint application helped attain some symmetry on the torso, I think. The whites, blues, and reds are metallic. The black parts are dry-brushed with gunmetal to give more detail. Please wait... |
