“Freeze those knees, my chickadees!”

Today I present Ruby Rhod! I wanted to continue the Fifth Element line and thought ‘who better to make than the loud-mouthed Cosmic DJ, himself’.

Head: McFarlane NBA Headcast
Body: Wire Armature
Hands: SF Remy
Feet: Resin cast blanks
Sculpt: Used Super Sculpey and Aves Apoxie

There was a certain look I wanted to capture, which is the main reason I decided to make him a static figure.

Pretty straight forward process. I started with the wire armature and added aluminum foil to help map out torso dimensions. I then began sculpting away. I knew which hands and head I was going to use. His right hand can move up and down, to adjust for holding things. The outrageous collars are made from blister packaging (cut to shape). For his microphone-staff I used this plastic straw I found in one of my miscellaneous bins. I have a bunch of them from somewhere (I don’t know) but it was a perfect fit. I simply sculpted the microphone end. And Ruby also comes with that pesky ‘Fire’ stone, made from sculpey and aves.

Now… can you guess what the most time consuming part was? You got it!! I was dreading having to paint this guy from the moment I started. I knew there was a certain pattern to the spots that I tried to mimic as best I could but, I painstakingly added each individual spot.

All in all, I’m pretty pleased with how he turned out. Oh, and I do plan on doing more from this film.

Thanks and let me know what you think.

amazing figure ! Waiting for a mangalor or a mondoshawan ? Pity that no company wants to use this license, there are so many characters. And we all do not have your talent to create them ourselves!

Thanks! You're right, this would've been a fun line indeed. I need to get my rear in gear and continue this line.

Hmm, regarding the cracking issue, I've developed an approach for avoiding cracking with my stuff. I realized that if I were to use Apoxy to sculpt pointy areas I.e. Batmans "ears" or the pointy parts of Quicksilvers hair, or the flame on Ghost Riders head for examples, that it would be easy for them to crack and snap off, especially if the figure took a tumble. My solution is that I use Kneadatite a.k.a. "Green Stuff" (actual brand name) for parts that require having a little "give", and so far it has worked really well. It's got a different consistency and is totally different than Apoxy if you've never used it, but it's a handy addition to the customizing arsenal, I think

You know, Blaynescott suggested the exact same stuff a while ago. I'll have to give it a shot. Thanks!

I had to say again how much I Love this figure and your sculpting job! How do you feel about the Sculpey as a tool? I've been thinking about giving it a try, Does it work as well for you as the apoxy?

I really enjoy working with Super Sculpey. It's soft and very workable material. Having said that, I won't be using it as much for larger scale pieces. The problem I'm noticing is that it tends to crack at the joints, which is no bueno for me. But I still use it to sculpt smaller pieces (heads, hands and such). I'm experimenting right now with a mixture of Super Sculpey and Sculpey Firm, but have run into the same cracking issue. For strength, nothing beats Apoxie Sculpt (epoxy).

Wow, this is terrific!!! Such an amazing sculpting job, You've done a really great job with the anatomy! The dimensions look spot on. Very well done. I think the choice to make it a static figure was a good one, because that pose is perfect.
