Ok, first off, I love Tim Drake. He was probably my favorite Robin. Cool headed, resourceful, loyal. What a fantastic character with which to update the Robin identity. Having said that, I hate, hate, HATE his costume in the N52. It is overly busy and looks like a Sao Paolo Carnival dancer. Seriously, it looks like the 90s came over and threw up all over him. But given my devotion to the World of Gotham, I couldn't ignore him. So deciding not to wait for a DCD or DCUC figure I decided to do my own version of Mr. Drake, greatly simplifying his costume and getting rid of some of the things I hated about it. I started off with the DCUC Red Robin. He is not too tall for a teenager, considering that DCD and Mattel's New 52 figures all use the 7" scale nowadays. The body they used for his figure is not as muscular as that used by say, Superman or Catman. It's leaner and it works. - removed the head - removed the belt and skirt (they were all one piece) - removed the harness and painted it gold - painted the appropriate parts of the arms black, kneepads red - gave him a Movie Masters Batman belt painted grey, thus covering up the space left by the missing original belt. I added a couple of drops of Superglue to his torso swivel, moving the piece a bit to let the glue toughen the joint without making it immobile - the upper part of the harness is from a utility belt I had laying around, now painted gold and cut in two; glued to his back and chestpiece - painted the little gold squares on his gloves. That's all the extra decoration I thought he needed. Anymore and it could overwhelm the design. - for the head I used a DCD Hush Nightwing with extra hair from Sculpey and modified mask - the wings: I wanted to avoid the Las Vegas showgirl look. I figured that RR gets his technology from Batman mainly and he uses his cape to glide so why not Tim? And so instead of individual feathers I used the cape from a DCUC Robin (red costume Tim). The scallops at the bottom are not so pointy that they can't look like "feathers." I painted the inside red and after cutting off the collar, super glued it to his back. - sealed the figure - the bo staff came with the RR figure. I'm pretty happy with this new addition to my Batman Family. he is nowhere near as buff as Nightwing or Batman nor as small as Damien. In short, he can pass for someone in his late teens. Maybe DC or Mattel will release a figure to replace it someday. ![]() |
