I was not a big fan of MOTU back in the 80's. Even as a kid I hated when toy makers made toys that were out of scale. Any way last summer I picked up a vintage Castle Grayskull for my toy store. When I brought it into the house my 5 year old took ownership of it. I began to ponder the issues I had with MOTU as a kid and decided to make things right in the universe (well Eternia any way).
I started by getting 2 cardboard barrels and wrapped them with insulation foam. (i used hot glue and staples to attach the foam to the barrels. Once they were covered with the foam I used a soldering iron to etch the shape of the stones. cut out the window and added the casteling on the top of the towers.

Next step was crafting the big skull. I used more insulation foam for this. I cut out the base shape and then cup out layers and stacked them to give it the 3D shape. I then used painters caulk to blend in the the layers. Being that it was supposed to look like old stone work I did not try to make it smooth or perfect. I wanted it to look like an old run down castle that was in need of repair.

I mounted the skull on a piece of 2" thick insulation foam and carved stone into this as well. the next step was painting the caslte. I spray painted it a base green and then added random greens to give it diferent shades.

The next step was the door this is just a couple pieces of foam where i cut out planks and painted it all brown. I then added the hardware to the door. I printed out 4 copies of the Matel exclusive door on card stock. I layered these to give it a 3 dimentional look.

The next step was the interior wall that you see when the draw bridge is open. For this i took stills of the 20xx MOTU cartoon and edited the people out. I like the way it gives the illusion of depth.

The last step was the iconic cannon on top of Grayskull. This is made up primarily of used office products.
