Book one: Redd Riding Hood

Once upon a post apocalyptic future time, there was a village beyond the wastelands that still had power due to a nuclear reactor plant nearby. For four generations after the big fall out the nuclear plant and the much needed energy that it provided was the foundation for this village so much so that the villagers call the facility Grandma. Over these generations the landscape between the village and the plant has changed significantly as the dark wasteland grew the village continued to move farther and farther away from Grandma, but due to knowledge and engineering skill of one family Grandma continues giving the village the energy it needs to thrive and grow. That family’s name is Redd, long ago before the big fall out the progenitors of this family name were both stationed at Grandma and were the management in charge of maintaining the facility, so they knew the workings of the plant inside and out. After the big fall out came and went, the Redds and other families of the plant workers lived inside Grandma until food became scarce and outdoor agriculture was necessary, while the walls of Grandma kept families safe for a time, the mutations and monsters that grew out of the atomic aftermath were so fearful that the people voted to leave the deteriorating facility to find a safer place to live this was the origin of the village. For these generations it was the Redd family’s main responsibility that Grandma continued to be linked to the village. So it was that every son and daughter born into Redd clan would be taught the engineering secrets that would keep Grandma in a good enough condition that it’s bountiful power would continue to bring light through the darkness to the village for generations to come.

Enter little Redd, the oldest daughter of three siblings born into the newest generation of the Redd family. A lovely young woman with an adoration of fixing machines, her love of machines mixed with her tomboyish nature keeps all would be suitors at bay. Brave and tough as nails, little Redd in her youth made the dark wasteland her playground until the day she strolled too far and was attacked by a pack of genewolves, genetically altered killing machines with increased strength and agility but the worst trait of these monsters is their low level human intelligence mixing a wolf’s natural cunning with basic human knowledge this lethal combination is one that would make these creatures the dominate threat to humankind in generations to come. Little Redd ran as fast as she could from the wolves, but with their newfound human cunning maneuvered her into a dead end, laughing at her all the while. Cornered little Redd pulled out her knife, it was then that the alpha wolf came from the back of the pack and stood on his two hind legs walking toward her the wolf talked in an eloquent human voice. Because of alpha’s mannerisms if little Redd didn’t know any better she would have thought this was a human in wolf’s clothing. The alpha offered little Redd a chance to survive if she would bring the pack to her village. She accepted because for all their newfound human knowledge the wolves still did not understand the concept of deception and lies. Little Redd took the wolves to one of the village’s battalion outpost, on the way she would trigger alarms so that the warriors could be ready. When the wolves reached to outpost they smelled humans all around and even though their basic animal instincts were telling them of danger, the humanistic side of their mind overwhelmed those instincts with greed and the need to feed. Surrounded on all fronts the wolves were massacred, during the skirmish the alpha sought to kill little Redd for her deception as the alpha wolf pounced on little Redd she drove her knife into his right eye. Thrashing around in pain the alpha took a blind swipe at little Redd with his paw scarring her forehead. Little Redd then ran into the arms of the warriors and as alpha looked from his one good eye at his pack decimated on the battlefield he screamed to little Redd that he would never forget her scent and he would kill her if it were the last thing he would do, alpha then ran into the darkness of the forest. With that said little Redd trained as a warrior, tracker and survivalist because every time little Redd must go to Grandma’s “house” she must not only contend with the four day journey though the treacherous terrain of the dark wasteland or the strange creatures wanting to feeding on her, no she must watch her back because out in that darkness a big bad wolf bent on revenge stalks her at every turn.

Future Fables- Little Redd Riding Hood: is decked out from head to toe in gear needed to survive the dark wasteland and the necessary equipment needed to repair Grandma with still trying to keep in the boundaries of the original Grimm fairy tale. She has armored chest and legs, shoulder flashlight, right shield arm, night vision goggles, air filtration unit, homing beacon, knifes, hatchet, revolver, exo-skeleton harness with plasma cutter and magnetic grappling system.
