This is one of several displays I have planned for my MOTU figures. Its 10in. High by 30in. wide, roughly.

Blue foam was cut to shape then glued to white foam board. Then a "goop" was applied(plaster, sand, caulk, sawdust and paint). Painted and dry brushed. Lava pools are plaster, paint and glue mix, then painted.

Nothing to it really. Just cutting foam into rocky shapes, dumping some slop on it wait for it to dry, then painting it.
Do so, would love to see what you come up with.

wow I really love this cave, its so detailed and it sounds like a lot of hard work went into it. I want to make one based off of your design. but the only thing that stands out to me is that figures seem too bright for the cave. other than that it looks amazing.
