Barack Obama is the 44th and current President of the United States. It was designed as a commission for "4Color-8Bit Comics & Games" in Kingston, Ontario. Obama merchandise had sold so well for them that year, they wanted a custom Obama figure to commemorate his sales potential in comics, cards, and toys. ^_^

"4C8B Comics & Games" also hosted an art show of my custom figures, and sold them from one of their display showcases for a year. This figure was a thankyou to the store owners for their support.

::Recipe:

-x1 DCD Jimmy Olson
-x1 DCD John Stewart (resculpted, then recast)
-Misc. McFarlane Basketball figure (open hand)
-Misc. McFarlane military figure (pointing/sword hand, clipboard)
-Misc. Wrestling figure (tie)
-HML 2-Pack Captain America (shield)
-Misc. TopCow comics figure - Katana.
-Minipaper craft backdrop (retextured/retooled in Photoshop to be larger/better resolution)
-Cardstock
-Various Magnets (from Gaussboys dot-com)
-TOPPS Obama Cards (for photo reference/skin tone matching)

About the Presidential Diorama:

I found a papercraft Obama online, and rescaled the pattern to be in scale with a 6" action figure. After re-texturing it in photoshop - I printed it out on a thick card stock/resume cover letter paper. After scoring all the crease lines with a lead-less mechanical pencil, I used my hobby knife over a cutting mat to isolate different elements for construction.

After assembly, I fitted cut foam inside each section (backdrop and base). Inside the base, I fixed 2 wide hockey-puck style magnets. I installed magnets in Obama's feet, so that the figure would stand correctly without needing foot-pegs. I did the same for the podium (magnet/foam inside), and ran a paperclip inside the clipboard - making it attach magnetically to the stand. :)

After resculpting the DCD Jimmy Olson, and the DCD John Stewart face (hairline, forehead, jaw, ears, then recast the original) - I assembled and painted the figure with Vallejo paints. It was sealed with Krazy Glue liquid type superglue, and Matte Vallejo varnish.

After the positive response I had to this custom (both at FANEXPO 2009, and via 4C8B Comics & Games), I've created others for customers based on a MM Joker Goon body, complete with the same style of play-stand. :)

This figure was a blast to create! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. :)

The skin color was the hardest thing to do about this figure. I was trying to avoid the generic black guy=brown paint, but it was difficult - mainly becuase (from what I understand - someone correct me?) Obama is of mixed race descent, which gives his skin an almost pink-ish undertone, rather than a light brown.
I tried painting this on one version, I he actually came out looking like a zombie. That version's not pictured here, heh. Below, I went the more generic route. The flash on the camera picks up more of the pink-tones than the regular photoshoot did.

This Obama custom was made way back in December 2008, so sadly those two figures weren't available at the time. For future Obama customs, I've considered getting one of those - I've never seen the Jedi one before though.

Pretty cool. Maybe 1 or 2 shades too dark though. Big thing bugs me about black figures is they are all almost the same shade of brown. As a black man I know all too well we ain't all the same shade
That's right ...I'm black (well half anyway)

I prefer 'SuperHero' redux Obama. I've since retooled the head to look more Obama-like. It was interesting trying to find a male headsculpt with black-style hair/facial features. It made me realize how few black superheroes there are, beyond Mr. Terriffic, John Stewart, and the guy SPAWN was before he died (Al Simmons).
Yeah the lack of black is whack . but maybe some dremel work on removing one of these heads might work
