This is the ToyBiz troll that should have been... I love the troll at the very end of Return Of The King so much, I just had to make one. First I prepared the body; I stripped off the Battle Troll armor, patched the hole in the chest where the original chest plate was. Next, I ground down the head a bit, so the helmet would fit. Then I made the loin cloth, sash, and completely new gums and teeth. Making the armor was the big challenge; I wanted it to be perfect, so I did lots of research; I looked at the film of course, but I also looked at the WETA statue. I found out that they are a little different from each other. The body armor in the movie looked almost like leather- king of flat, thin and brownish-gray. The body armor on the Weta statue looked like steel or iron, and was a bit thicker, and more detailed. So, I mixed the best features of both into one. I made all the add-on pieces from Sculpey Superflex, including an extra left hand, so the troll can hold his mace or be displayed with that hand open. Making the gauntlets required a lot of research to get the detail correct, but it worked out fine. Making the helmet was fun, but VERY tricky. I covered the head with tin foil, then sculpted one section of the helmet onto it. I removed the tin foil carefully, then baked the first piece while it was still on the tin foil. After it was cooled, I placed it back on the head, then sculpted the next section. That way, sculpting the next part would not damage the first one- and so on, until all the sections were complete. After all the sections of the helmet were sculpted and baked, I used my Dremmel grinder to make the edges smooth, and the curves just right. Because the helm was sculpted right over the head, it fit perfectly when it was all done. I textured all the surfaces of the armor with the Dremmel too, to give a beaten-metal look. I added real metal chains to the armor shoulders and at both sides of the waist. Finally, I made a new mace, and the wicked looking sword, and the extra hand. I painted everything with a special kind of acrylic. I decided that since I had done so much work on the Mordor Troll Chieftain, that it needed to have a box with complete box art too- so I created a box that perfectly fits with the ToyBiz packaging style. Since I can only upload a maximum of four photos with each custom, I will include the box art with some pictures of accesories (battle troll hammer and club, troll chieftain helmet and extra hand) in a seperate upload. I hope you all like the finished item!

gday, Im going to attempt to do this with the troll I bought recently seeing it didn't come with a mace or helmet. Whats your opinion on using Greenstuff to make the armor, helm, weapons?

Hello Staley... I would be willing, but it would be very expensive. You have no idea how many hours it took me to complete. The suit of armor alone is made with more than 80 pieces. Also, you would need to get a 'Battle Troll' by Toybiz, (maybe on ebay) and that would be costly too. If I told you how much I would charge, I think you would change your mind. I've done so many commissions for people, and every time I put in a lot of hours; after I finish, I calculate that I got paid about 2 or 3 dollars an hour for the work. I can't continue working that way, I'm sure you understand that.

Thank you for the kind compliment. I'm afraid I reluctantly sold it some months ago. Of course now I wish I hadn't, but my finances were in a dire state at the time so I had little choice.

"I have both of the original LOTR trolls with rubber head skin, the Cave Troll and the Armored Cave Troll. Sadly, they all have the same problem. ToyBiz let some company over in China decide what material to use for the head, without testing it over time. When mine started to crack, I thought it might be the hot weather, or cigarette smoke. But I found out there are hundreds of other collectores who know about this frustrating troll problem. To fix mine, I had to use super glue to close the cracks, then I coated the skin with a thin layer of the same glue. Obviously it no longer can open its mouth, but at least the skin won't fall off. If it is left alone to rot, I think the skin will eventually fall off completely in the next five to eight years or so. There will be a lot of unhappy collectors out there. When ToyBiz began to see the 'rot' problemfor themselves, (and receive lots of complaints from consumers) that's when they released the Battle Troll in roto-cast format. I made the Troll Chieftain from the body and head of a Battle Troll, because (A) it's a much closer match to how the Mordor Troll looked in 'Return of the King' and (B) because the Battle Troll's head is made of hard vinal, which I could work with my tools. I changed the head thusly: I reduced the size of the lips; raised the upper lip, replaced the gums and teeth, repainted the eyes, reduced the size of the eyebrows, changed the details of the chin-hair, sanded down the cranium slightly... If you own the original trolls with rotting faces, just fixing the cracks alone won't be enough to stop the rotting process. New cracks will keep forming unless you coat the skin entirely with a sealer, like super glue. I hope I answered your questions, and I hope my advice helps you. Thanks for your compliments about my Troll custom!"

Very much so. A disappointing thing to happen to such a cool figure but I guess it can't really be helped now. Shortly after I got mine I saw how bad the face really was done: another figure sitting at TRU had its face completly pulled off, apparently they didn't realize that such a thin skin wouldn't stand up to the normal 8 year old's destruction

A question about the original Troll figure, both to Anthrapoid and Dr. Nightmare. How was the face made? Is it like the cave Trolls thats made out of the rubbery stuff? If so, have you experianced any cracking or tearing?
Since you have the Cave troll, have you had either of the two either Doc?
Over time(and the use of the actions) the face on mine has begun to tear and has ripped along the face in many places(like small cuts). Not sure if it was the temperature, play or the action, its just begun to rip.
Again, nice custom though, you did a kickin job!!!

Thanks again everybody. I really dove into this one. It was a 2 part thing; The first part was working on the troll itself, making the oversized hands a bit smaller, making new gums and teeth, trimming the toenails down to the right size, etc. The second part of course, was the armor. In a way, I'm glad ToyBiz fizzled out before they did this one- because they would have probably scwered it up quite a bit. (sorry ToyBiz!) ... Treebeard is proof of this; His beard looked like a piece of rough shoe leather. I wish I could post more pictures of my Treebeard, because the branches on his back look really nice, how the leaves grow from them. And I was happy with the increase in height I did too; If you look at stills from The Two Towers, you will see how long his lower legs are. Kind of like Paul McCartney's animated character in Yellow Submarine...LOL

I just got the normal cave troll and would LOVE to armor it up, but geez, anythig I do to it would only pale in comparison to this thing D: Maybe some original Nightmare armor

I'm finding it hard to find the appropriate words to describe how awesome this custom is. I think most people don't realize the work that was put into this one. Thanks for the accompanying info and especially the part on how you made the helmet, that was a pretty clever way of making it. Overall, this custom is one proffessional job. I salute you!
