This Superman design was created by Larry G--------. We worked together by phone and email to bring his vision of a "more mature Justice League" Superman to life.

Recipe:
-ML Wonderman - (Elbows,Torso, and pelvis-downward
-DC Direct JLA Superman [Angry Face v.] - (Head [modified], Hand/Forearms,
-ML Faceoff Punisher (biceps)
-ML AntMan (red shoulder ball joints)

-a website-sourced Flight Stand (Adjustable)

-Aves Sculpt
-Sanding Sponges, Sandpaper (fine and medium grain)
-Testor Ink Jet Printer waterslide decal sheets
-Vallejo acrylic paints (Yellow, Ultramarine blue + dark blue, Flat Red + Gory Red, various shades of flesh tone custom mixed for skintone).

Larry didn't like the 'dark/gritty' custom figure approach which uses lots of shadowing/dry brushing. Instead, he asked for solid primary colors, and a sculpt that would be smooth/allow for natural lighting to cast the necessary shading.

Larry sent me a rough sketch via email of the front/back, and I made some changes (height of the logo, horizontal positioning of the Yellow shields on the back/belt), and the design was approved.

Since the Wonderman body is an ideal Superman stand in, and contains the ball jointed design Larry favored, I sculpted over the entire figure. I effectively covered all of the pebbly texture that the Wonderman's basic sculpt has, while beefing up his muscle groups.

To keep the figure anatomically correct, I found a massage therapist-style charge of the muscle groups, and some google-image shots of body builders front, side and back. Using a technique I saw on CSI once (I kid you not), where sculpting material is positioned in their rough shape/height on a skull where the muscles would be, then smoothed/blended into each other. I used the same approach on this figure, and it worked beautifully. Using a sanding sponge afterward to ensure there were no finger prints or grit, the finished surface was wonderfully smooth, yet detailed.

To avoid paint rub, I trimmed around each joint with my hobby knife in a rotational motion, and removed the 'rocker' joints in the arms. The finished/sealed arms were set with their joint housing dremmeld down (thanks to a sacrificed ML Ant Man) in this figures torso.

The neck was also adjusted/re-sculpted to avoid the 'hunchback' look that a basic ML Wonderman figure has.

The logo was designed using the 'Kingdom Come' logo as a base, and tweaked in Photoshop at 300dpi. I printed/bonded/cut out the logo, and positioned it on the finished figures chest.

Unfortunately, I was only able to get pictures of this figure sealed with Krazy glue, and not the final finish using Vallejo Matte Finish - hence the glossiness in the images. This was the last figure I completed before flying overseas to teach English in South Korea. I'm actually posting this from a "PC Barn" in Mok Po City, S.K right now. :)

Larry wanted his Superman without a cape, and I think this design looks fantastic as a result. I really enjoyed creating this figure, and working with Larry to bring his design to life. It's possible that we'll be seeing other characters from his version of the Justice League in the future.

Cheers,
-Blayne
