Upon finding some of Dr. Doom's disgarded equipment, Arnim Zola, a scientific genius specializing in genetics and cloning, decided to harness the artifacts and upgrade his own biomechanical structure. He was able to then tap into unfathomable powers, which included the ability to manipulate time, reverse mortality, open portals to other dimensions.

Zola's most noticeable feat, however, was performed upon himself. He constructed a specially modified body which lacked a head. Instead, Zola's face was located - via holographic projection - on his chest, and atop his shoulders was an ESP Box, a psychotronic device which he used to exert control over his monster creations.
Whenever his current body got damaged, or utterly destroyed, Arnim was able to send his personality to another one stored elsewhere, thus giving himself a form of immortality.
