A cyborg Chocobo (large flightless birds commonly used as transportation in the Final Fantasy series) that first appeared in the 1991 Squaresoft Final Fantasy Adventure Gameboy video game (original Japanese title: Seiken Densetsu: Final Fantasy Gaiden; European moniker: Mystic Quest). A full, modern remake of said game was also released in 2003, on the Gameboy Advance, sporting the name Sword of Mana.

After a confrontation with the last survivor of the evil Vandole Empire--the warlock Julius--goes badly, the protagonist of the game is blasted over the precipice of a great cliff by a bolt of the villain's magic. Despite all odds, he survives the plummet down the towering waterfall, although not without injuries. Lying dazed and broken on the sands of the scorching Crystal Desert, the young man despairs. Squinting his eyes against the merciless sun for what he feels must surely be the last time, the hero suddenly spies a familiar silhouette limping across the shard-covered dunes--his Chocobo! Even with the bloody, tattered columns of bone and tendon that the bird once called legs barely functioning, the loyal Chocobo somehow manages to drag its master to the gates of the nearby town of Ish before collapsing. While the young man recuperates under the watchful eyes of the remote village's inhabitants, Dr. Bowow--the resident eccentric genius--takes pity on the creature, replacing the mangled legs of the bird with new, mechanical constructs. Christening his latest creation "Chocobot", Dr. Bowow presents the avian cyborg to the hero. Rested and restored, the two resume their quest to protect the all-giving Tree of Mana from the mad designs of Julius . . .

Chocobot retains all the capabilities of a normal Chocobo, but its new legs grant it the amazing power to run across water--no river, lake, or even ocean, can impede its progress. Simply use the 'ASK' command (when Chocobot is on the same screen as you) to get on/off. While riding a Chocobo, the hero is completely immune to all enemy attacks, but cannot enter a town or dungeon until he dismounts (if you use the bird to avoid battles, be aware that you're also passing up opportunities to obtain experience points, gold, and possibly item drops). Also, in this game, Chocobos can't stand freezing temperatures, so you'll have to explore the Snow Field area of the world map on foot.

One final comment: Robotic legs are apparently attractive, because Chocobot manages to find a mate during the game's ending.

Even if you hate most jrpgs (coughmecough)this is still one of the best customs ever submitted.

I know I've asked for a tutorial for making things like this before, but I'll ask again because even with WIP pictures I still can't understand the process lol

While it still has experience levels and stuff like that, Final Fantasy Adventure is a top-down view, real-time action RPG (like Zelda), so, it may appeal to you even if you don't like turn-based RPGS.

A tutorial for something like this would have be to quite lengthy, as there are dozens upons dozens of steps, so, I'm afraid I don't have the time to put something like that together. That said, the basics of papier mache are easy. It's just a matter of wrapping strips of newsprint and glue around other objects (forms), or bunched paper itself, to achieve the various shapes, and you build your way up from the simpler components into more complex ones (I.e., the robot legs started out as smooth, narrow cylinders which I then embellished). I also used a woodburner to do some of the smoothing and detailing on this piece (which are the darker scorched areas on the WIP photos).

Glad you enjoyed Chocobot! I've always had a soft spot for Chocobos and this cyborg rendition is arguably the most unique one Squaresoft ever came up with.

I just thought of a neat source of parts for a large scale one: Terminator endo bits such as the arms with the hands modified.

you know what. I'm a dummy, I have the dawn of souls on ROM but they changed the storyline from the one they put on the Playstation disc. Yes I know too much about this. In Sword of mana you fall over a waterfall into a pond and get rescued at the start. Have to play the gameboy version to remember how it goes. I know I loved the game back then. Oh and your website rocks I found more info on stuff I needed than I'll ever use lol.

Well, I'm happy to have placed third--one certainly can't complain with so many other great entries. As for people easily recognizing my stuff, I've cooked up a plan to (hopefully) fool people in the next contest--we'll see how it works.
Sephiroth: Not having played the remake, I don't know if Chocobot is in Sword of Mana--I would think it would have to be though, seeing as how that's the only way you can cross water, which is a required part of the game progression in the original.
I've got FF2 on the GBA Dawn of Souls compilation cart, but, for the life of me, I can't recall Chocobos at all in the game, which is why I doublechecked on Wikipedia.

Most of us have small things that make it easy to tell. I'm surprised there were no other Final fantasy entries since you have cyborgs in 7 and robots in more than a few.

I knew it, your style is so recognisable, and you are the only one I know who builds from scratch, well done on 3rd but this was easily first in my book

Thanks to everbody who commented/voted for me (even if you gave me a 1 :P)
Sephiroth: I thought it was FF3 myself, but Wikipedia agrees with you. I haven't played FF2 in ages . . .
Demonpossessed: I did consider various elaborate arrangements, but jet engines never occured to me. I ultimately decided to just go with a fairly straightforward approach to them, rather than something more exotic.
If anyone would like to see more photos, as well as in-game screenshots of the character, you can check out my web page for this figure .

haha neat idea. I remember playing ff7 and searching for the gold chocobo. I think it would be cool if you added jet boosters of some sort.

I think chocobos appeared first in FF2 in japan but I could be wrong. They don't seem to be as important to stories as they used to be in the games sadly. It looks great.
