Black Widow (Marvel Legends) Custom Action Figure
I have a fondness for the upper torso sculpt of the Toy'R'Us exclusive Black Widow two pack box sets from Hasbro's early ML days. 5 or 6 years ago I modified it to fit onto the motorcycle riding Widow to update its articulation and aesthetics. When the new Target exclusive BW came out recently, I thought it was time to try to update my display BW by swapping in that TRU BW torso to the Target figure. It became more work than I initially thought. The Target BW has upper and lower torsos made from hard ABS plastic, which means you can't boil and pop them apart from each other. So I tried cracking apart the upper torso but couldn't do it cleanly and had to basically destroy it to get it off the lower torso. The diaphragm joint is a ball joint in the lower torso and a flat square that gets locked in place into the upper torso, so there was no "plug" that can be inserted into the socket of the TRU BW's upper torso. Moreover, the Target BW's torso has a bigger circumference than the TRU's, so even if the joint could plug in the TRU torso, it would be too small thereby sit high on the Target body's rib cage. Since the Target BW can't go back to its original form from my destroying its upper torso, I figured the only way to salvage the rest and make it work with the TRU upper torso is to join the two at the waist. With the TRU torso sitting on the biker Widow body from my previous tinkering, I just sawed that custom apart at the waist and likewise the Target Widow's lower body and adhered them together along the thinnest part of the waist. They didn't line up perfectly, but some dremeling and patching with Apoxie and it's good enough for me. This Widow is all Target Widow parts except the upper torso, head, and upper part of lower torso (and maybe belt too, I can't remember which belt I put on it). Just the addition of the lower ab crunch helps so much in bending forward/backward as the photos show. She can grab her toes but not as easily as the Target one due to Target's having the butterfly joint to enable the arms to reach forward more. There's no way I can think of to bring the butterfly joint over to the TRU upper torso so I'm okay with it. Not sure if I like the boxset Psylocke head for this, though it's a really good sculpt. I can always swap it out for the short haired Target head. Please wait... |
