General Antonio Luna, born October 29, 1866, was the commanding general of the Philippine Revolutionary Army during the Filipino-American War (known to those of you in the States who have even heard of it as the "Philippine Insurrection"). Growing up in a well-to-do family, he was sent to Europe to study along with compatriots such as Jose Rizal and Marcelo del Pilar (with whom he would help found the Propaganda Reform Movement). Luna studied literature, chemistry, and (importantly) military tactics. After Jose Rizal's execution at the hands of the Spanish colonizers, Luna was implicated as part of the brewing Philippine Revolution and arrested by the Spaniards. After being pardoned, Luna returned to the Philippines and joined the Philippine Revolutionary Army, just as the Filipinos' next enemy showed up: the United States of America. Luna would go on to become the highest-ranking general in the Revolutionary Army, behind only President Emilio Aguinaldo himself. Luna's tactics would long be a thorn in the invading Americans' side. He would rabidly instill discipline among his men and would advocate a plan of guerrilla warfare in order to starve out the Americans and sour public opinion on occupation, similar to what the Vietnamese would do six or seven whole decades later (a plan that Luna never got to implement). Unfortunately, infighting was rampant within Aguinaldo's government. Those who wished for the Philippines to be annexed (mainly for their business interests) clashed with harder core independence advocates like Luna. Additionally, tribalism plagued Aguinaldo's own military, as certain units would answer only to Aguinaldo, thus compromising what should have been the chain of command. In the end, Luna was lured to Aguinaldo's headquarters and killed by men of the Kawit Brigade, a unit of Aguinaldo's own provincemates who were loyal to him and him alone. In 2015, a biopic called "Heneral Luna" came out, depicting his exploits in the Filipino-American War and (deservedly) making him a household name. With that history lesson out of the way, it feels good to finally post this figure. The base of the figure was a Marvel Universe Red Skull (not a bad choice for non-American dress uniforms). I painted the uniform gray, and painted the shoulder boards black and gold. The officer's cap also came from an MU Red Skull. I painted most of it white and painted the medallion and cord gold. Luna's head and neck are from the old 3.75 inch unmasked Clone Trooper figures, with the mustache painted on. The revolver and holster are both from Marauder. PUNYETA, it feels good to post this!
