Hi all! Just a minor post today. Couple of simple mods to some otherwise excellent figures. Let's take a look at NECA's Rocksteady and Bebop!

So Playmates already did an awesome set of figures that were roughly in scale with the NECA '87 cartoon TMNT figures. Of course, as most TMNT collectors know, they weren't very cartoon accurate, with odd colors, limited articulation, and sculpts that - while very detailed and high quality - looked more like real world interpretations of the characters rather than the actual animation models themselves. A number of customizers (myself included) made various mods to these figures to bring them more in line with the cartoon versions. You can check out my previous effort on my figure list. And while they weren't perfect, they were at least a viable placeholder until something better came along.

Well, something better has arrived: NECA's much sought after (and nearly IMPOSSIBLE to find) Rocksteady and Bebop 2-pack is now available (no, really, it's out there, trust me!), and I have to say, when I finally got mine, I was . . . of mixed feelings. Don't get me wrong, the sculpts and paint and articulation were spectacular, easily superior to the Playmates versions. The accessories, however . . . reused guns from the Foot Soldiers. Nothing else. No iconic or cartoon-accurate weapons, no helmet for Rocksteady, no accessories that reference the original figures, even Rocksteady's combat knife is MOLDED INTO its sheath! The Playmates offerings were MUCH better, with personalized guns (based on the old figures), and a knife and helmet for Rocksteady. Way to drop the ball here, NECA! Naturally, I decided to correct these oversights.

MOST of the changes here are for Rocksteady. I started with the knife. It was a simple matter to cut off the handle, hollow out the sheath, and fix an existing blade to the handle. The guns were similarly easy. I referenced the first season of TMNT, and found that Rocksteady's rifle only had minor differences compared to the one that came with the figure, belt fed instead of magazine, with a solid stock instead of a hollow pipe stock. Bebop's gun was completely different, a small blaster with a magazine and a front shield. I initially thought I was going to have to sculpt it myself, but by an awesome coincidence, Playmates' old Triceraton figure came with just such a gun, and it was even in scale to the new NECA figures! All it needed was a full paint job. Rocksteady also originally wore brown and black camo pants, which was a five minute paint job. And of course, the sewer cover and trash can lid were simple parts to find.

The difficult aspect of this project was Rocksteady's helmet. While he only wore it in the first two or three seasons, I always felt it was an integral part of his character design (especially as it's appeared on every figure ever produced of the character), but it also had to be removable to represent that the character often did not wear it. I also wanted it to be screen accurate, so it couldn't be like the Playmates version, which had grooves cut into the sides to accommodate his ears. In the cartoon, the ears stick out of the helmet through holes, not grooves. This posed a dilemma, as his ears were solid pieces molded as part of his head.

Solution: poseable ears! *LOL* Yes, I am that nuts, I added tiny ball joints (the elbow joints from a Mega Construx Rocksteady, coincidentally) into his ears, so they could bend and twist, or even be removed and replaced, so I could put his solid epoxy putty-sculpted helmet on his head at will. Not only does it allow for the helmet, but it makes Rocksteady way more expressive!

I know they're simple, silly little changes, but personally, I think they make all the difference, and I couldn't be happier with my two massive, moronic mutants!

Hey Batman, can you tell me how you hollowed out Rocksteady's sheath for his knife?

1 - Remove the knife/sheath piece from the belt.

2 - Cut off the handle, precisely where the sheath meets the guard.

3 - Use a Dremel tool (or any other hand drill) with a narrow-gauge bit to drill directly down into the sheath. Do this a few times and wiggle the bit around to make a large enough hollow in the sheath.

4 - Try not to drill through the sides of the sheath! The sheath is a mid-grade hardness rubber material, so if you hold the outside of the sheath in your fingers while you drill, you should be able to feel when the drill is too close to the surface, and pull back so you don't poke through. So long as you work slowly, it won't be a problem.

5 - Still, even if you DO drill through the sides by accident, you can always use a little sculpting material to patch the holes. It doesn't have to look perfect, the sculpt of the sheath is organic and rough, like it's made of leather and wood, so it's easy enough to add extra size to the thing and make it look right.

6 - The knife blade came from a 1/6 scale combat knife I found on ebay. Simply cut off most of the handle, fashion a little tang out of the last bit of handle, drill a hole in the new handle (that you cut from Rocksteady's sheath), glue in the blade tang, and you got a new knife!

7 - You're going to want to test-fit the blade into the hollowed-out sheath several times. Keep drilling out the sheath until it fits cleanly.

8 - Of course, anywhere you sculpted over drill holes, paint as needed.

9 - Glue the finished sheath back onto the belt on Rocksteady, and you're done!

These look great!I was definitely a wee bit peeved that Bebop didn't come with that gun, but it's good to know the vintage Triceraton one scales perfectly! Not that I've been able to actually find this set ata reasonable price...yet!

To be honest, I had to buy mine after-market, from someone on ebay. Yeah, that might feel like a scalp, BUT:

Original figure set = $52-$55 in store
Shipping = $10-$12
Sales Tax = Depending on your state, could be as much as $5

Give an online friend $10 to pick up an extra from a store near them 'cuz your local stores don't get them in . . . looking at about $80, give or take. Find an ebay seller who wants about that, maybe a little less if you're lucky, sounds like a reasonable deal to me! *shrug*

As for the gun, that's actually a really common piece online, so definitely track one down!

Thanks for looking!

to be fair NECA aren't supposed to be referencing the old figures, that's what Super 7 are doing (even going as far as having an alternate head for Shredder that has the ridiculous eyebrows painted on the helmet like the old figure bizarrely had), NECA's just toon/game. But these are some great additions and the use of a MC Rocksteady ball joints (I have two of those lil Rocksteadys and two Bebops as I did a lil bit of Foot Soldier army building for my MC collection) for his ears amuses me greatly. :P Really nicely done mods and extras.

Thanks for looking, and glad I made ya smile!

I know NECA isn't looking to copy the old figures, so yes, I'd totally agree, they wouldn't be expected to make the shields or Bebop's drill gun. And I can even forgive avoiding the helmet, given the complexity involved (sure, it would be as simple as making the ears separate parts that peg into his head, so you can take the helmet on and off, simple solution, but some extra and largely unnecessary engineering, so not unreasonable to leave it out) and the fact that he didn't have it for MOST of the series.

But the omission of ANY original accessories? Just some reused rifles and blasters and a communicator? They even have the SAME HANDS!! *LOL* I just feel, at the price point we're talking, that's a bit of a rip. And ESPECIALLY when they actually HAD to make the knife on Rocksteady's back to make him screen accurate, and then DIDN'T make it useable, that's just laziness.

They've just gone so above and beyond on all the other releases up to this point (and, from promo photos, all the coming figures as well), the fact that they skimped on these two is kinda jarring and upsetting. Just two original guns and a knife, that's all I would have really asked!

Nice choice of accesories, where did you get the shields from?

Short answer: ebay.

The trash can lid is wrestling accessory. Specifically, it is a "WCW Bruisers: Raven w/ Trash Attack" trash can lid. It is NOT a WWF or WWE accessory, and I chose it because it's slightly larger than the ones from Jakks or Mattel, and it's a two-piece accessory (the handle is a separate part pegged onto the lid) rather than the usual "one molded piece with a hole in the lid where the handle sticks up" design that Mattel does. I modified it somewhat ('cuz the handle is a separate piece, there were big peg-sockets on the inside where the handle attached through the top of the lid, so I had to carve them out with the Dremel so the interior of the lid looked normal), but you can see what it originally looked like if you look up the "Bruisers: Raven" figure, or in my previous Bebop and Rocksteady custom. Just search ebay for "wcw trash" and a few will pop up. But for what it's worth, just about any wrestling trash can lid will work (though again, they tend to be kinda small).

The manhole cover shield is actually a 3-D printed piece from an ebay seller called dragosteart. He makes a BUNCH of cool 1/12 scale accessories and diorama pieces, from wall-mounted monitors and keypads to Japanese lanterns to electrical boxes to action effects (smoke and webbing and other bits and pieces) and more! The sewer cover is just a sewer cover, not a shield, but it was a simple matter to glue a handle on the back, obviously. I chose this manhole design because it's the one most similar to the shield on the classic figure from the '80s. There's another guy on ebay, juicetincustoms, who sells another style of manhole cover (a cross-hatch design instead of a radial checkered pattern) that I used for a different custom project (that I haven't posted here, but may in the future), and he also sells a lot of awesome action figure accessories. He specializes in food items, but also makes some action effects, and some weird stuff like 1/12 VHS tapes, boom boxes, toilets, and even a wood coffin!

Anyway . . . LONG in-depth answer, but I hope it helped everyone for future custom projects! Thanks for looking, glad you like it!
