Kal-El is the Kryptonian identity that Superman took when he was under the Eradicator's control to act as the "ideal" Kryptonian. He grew distant from humanity and isolated himself in the Fortress of Solitude until the Kents manged to make him recover.
Superman has also had the Kal-El name in alternate stories where Krypton never exploded.
